Calmar pulls trigger
on move

Calmar, one of Lee’s Summit’s top employers, is moving to Grandview.
The Lee’s Summit manufacturer of spray triggers, located near the junction of M-291 South and U.S. 50, is phasing out its local operations during the next nine months to consolidate its three area facilities to one large existing facility in Grandview.
The move is a culmination of different issues, including the lack of expansion opportunities in Lee’s Summit and the immediate need for the corporation to modernize its operations, said Bill Seiberlich, spokesperson for Saint-Gobain Calmar.
The Paris-based Compagnie de Saint-Gobain purchased Calmar in 1998. Calmar has two Lee’s Summit facilities, the 130,000-square-foot main building and a 60,000-square-foot adjacent facility. The third location is 120,000 square feet of underground storage in Sugar Creek.
The corporation has considered moving for the past 18 months, weighing several options, including building a new local facility, finding another suitable facility in Lee’s Summit or relocating to Mexico, Seiberlich said.
Moving 12 miles away into the former House of Lloyd building in Grandview leaves open the opportunity to retain its current local workforce, maintain the company’s manufacturing presence in the metro area and fulfill the corporation’s desire to modernize in a larger facility, he said.

JoCo has had this for probably 10 years now. If an Olathe company wants to move OP....OP is then obligated to call Olathe and say "YOU'D BETTER TRY TO RETAIN THIS COMPANY." Once Olathe has exhausted all efforts, or the company is just bent on moving to OP, then Olathe sends a letter to OP telling them to just make sure the project stays in JoCo or Kansas.

Don't get any wild hope for a metrowide version...it'll never happen.

Pretty typical. Different parts of the region cooperate among themselves, but refuse the same courtesy to other parts of the metro.

I'm just being honest. Every so often Missouri will extend a hand to Kansas and suggest a metro-wide moritotium on incentives...since Kansas is winning...they refuse the offer.

On a brighter side, Missouri has recently employed a new Director of Business Services to oversee the incentives game. His name is David Seaman. I met David a few weeks ago and he's exactly the shot in the arm Missouri needs to get competitive. David had a similar job in Colorado Springs and was with Georgia Power in Atlanta before that. He fully understands that the incentive packages form Missouri suck wind and will bring us back to a competitive level.

This is a very good thing for Missouri.
