Kansas City Capstone Awards - Crowning Achievements in Real Estate
The Kansas City Business Journal is accepting nominations for the second Capstone Awards program. The Kansas City Business Journal and its partners - Bank Midwest, Time Warner Cable Business Class, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and Walton Construction - will spotlight those organizations that have been involved in real estate development projects and transactions that enhance the Kansas City area. We will honor Kansas City's most talented developers, brokers and architects, as well as achievements in innovative design. We will celebrate these accomplishments at an awards luncheon on April 5 and feature them in a special supplement published April 6. Recognition will be given in the following categories: office, multifamily, retail, mixed use, industrial, brokering, architectural design, community impact and master-planned community.
To be eligible for consideration, the first phase of the project or its entirety needs to be completed and ready for occupancy between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2006. All projects/transactions must be in the metropolitan area (Jackson, Cass, Clay, Ray and Platte counties in Missouri, and Johnson, Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties in Kansas.) Projects that have won previously are eligible based on new phases completed during 2006.
INFORMATION ON SUBMITTING THE REQUIRED SUPPORTING MATERIALS:
Each project is required to submit 4-6 electronic photographs. Photos should consist of both internal and external views. Photos may be submitted via CD or e-mailed to clockyer@bizjournals.com. If no electronic photographs are available, please forward hard copies to address below and note that the photographs submitted will not be returned and become the property of the Kansas City Business Journal.
We ask that you also submit additional material that demonstrates the deal's significance. This could be in the form of press releases, news articles and marketing information. Please submit 8 double-sided copies of this additional information, including printouts of the pictures you are submitting electronically.
ALL PHOTOGRAPHS AND SUPPORTING MATERIAL MUST BE DELIVERED NO LATER THAN 5 PM ON JANUARY 12, 2007. Please deliver to: Kansas City Business Journal/Capstone Awards, Attn: Christine Lockyer, 1100 Main Street, Suite 210, Kansas City, MO 64105.

Help honor real estate leaders
Kansas City Business Journal - January 6, 2006
by Brian Kaberline
Maybe it's the Tonka-toting little boy in me, but I get a charge out of touring construction and renovation projects. It's impressive to see lines on a design become walls, to see an older building come back to life and to admire the work of fine craftsmen.
The one regret I have during such walk-throughs is that it is so hard to share the experiences through the paper.
It's not that real estate and development aren't important. It's no coincidence that the real estate beat is covered by our senior reporter or that some editions are awash in stories about plans for new buildings, sales of industrial space and large tenants seeking new offices.
That's because real estate and development hits on so many cylinders for our readers. It's of interest to those who buy and sell land; who are involved in the design and construction of buildings; who finish, furnish and outfit the interiors; and who are looking to buy, sell, lease or lease out space. In short, it's important to nearly every reader at some time or another.
Yet, with so many deals and transactions, there's scarcely time to step back and revisit the projects once they're completed.
Now, we're making time.
The Business Journal is asking readers to nominate the outstanding real estate development projects and transactions of 2005 as part of our new Capstone Awards program. The aim of the program is to honor the projects, people and companies that are building Kansas City as a center for business.
The Capstone Awards, I hope, will provide an opportunity to go beyond such utilitarian information as square feet and acreage and concentrate on how real estate projects shape the way we live and work.
We'll recognize office, retail, multifamily residential, mixed-use and industrial projects; master-planned communities; brokering; architectural design; and community impact in a special supplement and at an awards luncheon in April.
You can make nominations in any of the categories through our Web site (the specific address is below) through Jan. 20. A panel of experts will sort out the nominations and determine the honorees.
I hope you'll take the time to let us know about the projects that left you awestruck in 2005, be it the office building you work in, the shopping center you frequent or the new neighborhood that has sprung up in your part of town.
Help us share your appreciation for these projects and the talented folks who brought them about with people throughout Kansas City, and join us in appreciating the area's peak performers in the areas of real estate and development.

In that the Professional Building was ordered demolished by the City several years ago and then went to the Court of Appeals as a public nuisance, and the project also took out that derelict Natl. Garage, it has to get serious consideration for my vote.

i vote the president and/or 909 walnut for most overall impact and preservation of fabulous structures. if i had to only pick one, it'd be the president.
