Do you think there will be 1000 soon (if even at all)?

Tom Sauk always looked like a flimsy kiddy pool to me. It's only a matter of time until a toddler warps the side and floods the yard.

Flood compensation
Utility should help extend Katy Trail

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has an intriguing suggestion for connecting the Katy Trail to the Kansas City area, a longtime goal of hikers and bicyclists.

A former railroad bed to extend the Katy could be part of the compensation AmerenUE pays for damaging Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, Blunt says.

A breach in the Taum Sauk Reservoir on Dec. 14 flooded the popular park in southeast Missouri with 1.3 billion gallons of water.

AmerenUE, a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Ameren Corp., owns the reservoir.

The utility also controls an old Rock Island railroad bed from Windsor, which is on the Katy Trail, to Pleasant Hill. Blunt wants it turned over to the state. The Mid-America Regional Council in Kansas City supports the idea.

Settlement to push Katy Trail closer to KC
By BILL GRAHAM
The Kansas City Star

A $180 million settlement in the Taum Sauk Reservoir collapse in eastern Missouri will provide a long-sought benefit for Kansas City trail enthusiasts.

The cross-state Katy Trail could move closer to the metropolitan area — to Pleasant Hill — under the settlement. Clearing brush from the trail’s path could begin as early as next spring.

The article said they were negotiating with UP for rail beds that would carry it from pleasant hill to the TSC.

The plan is to continue up the Rock Island line through Greenwood, Lee's Summit, Raytown, and to the Sports Complex.  This part is owned by the UP, so it will be a completely different project and require a different negotiation and agreement.  The city of Pleasant Hill is working on the segment between there and Lee's Summit.  From Lee's Summit there is an opportunity to sign an on-street bike route into the city.

Here is a map.  Existing trail in green, Ameren segment in blue, and the future UP segment in red:

Ironic that it will end at the TSC.  Considering that they don't allow bikes on their property!

Hopefully they will extend it down Blue Parkway and into the Plaza/Trolley Trail.

It won't literally end on TSC property, but in that vicinity.  It's too early to know exactly where the terminus will be.  The future connection to the Plaza would be via a new trail along the Blue River - you would go south on the Blue River Trail to Brush Creek, then west on the Brush Creek Trail to the Plaza.  Or you could north along the Blue River to the Missouri River and get to Downtown via the future extension of the Riverfront Trail.

BTW, my understanding was that only the Chiefs banned bikes, not the Royals.  So it depends who is playing at the TSC.

Hendricks: Metro trail expansion blazes ahead

If things work out, Missouri’s cross-state hiking-biking path will reach the Kansas City area three years from now, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. That’s figuring in time to schmooze adjoining landowners and to plan and build a trail alongside the former Rock Island tracks between Windsor and Pleasant Hill.

Finally.

It looked as if it would never happen. But the way was cleared, as you’ll recall, by last year’s settlement in the Taum Sauk dam disaster lawsuit.

Next biggest deal: Missouri lawmakers approved funding, despite fears they’d find another way to blow the $18 million set aside for trail development.

It would be great if our local trail system was ready to connect to the Katy so I could take a trail from Lenexa all the way to St. Louis.

Which brings us to the bad news.

We’re not ready, if “ready” means trail connections to each corner of the metro area by the time the Katy arrives in 2011.

Huge gaps remain, especially on the Missouri side. Still, they’re working on it. And we’re lots further along trail-wise than at the city’s sesquicentennial in 2001, when a metrowide system of hiking and biking paths was named as one of the 10 giant steps for Kansas City to be cutting-edge.

We’re also way further along than when the local trail-building boom took off in the 1980s, Bill Eddy reminded me the other day.

if you want the katy trail extended to KC, submit a supportive comment for this funding application (scroll to bottom) to acquire the necessary right of way from the railroad:

...and MoDOT's district engineer promptly removes it from the list, which leaves the next opportunity for funding as the federal STP program (administered locally by MARC).

Gov. Jay Nixon today announced that by the end of 2016, Missouri State Parks expects to complete the extension of the Katy Trail from Windsor to Pleasant Hill along the Rock Island Trail State Park. The 47.5-mile-long extension will allow hikers and bicyclists greater access from the Kansas City region to the 240-mile long Katy Trail, which runs from Clinton to St. Charles County.

Please join Gov. Jay Nixon and Missouri State Parks in opening the 47.5-mile Rock Island Trail State Park, which serves as an extension of the Katy Trail. A dedication ceremony will take place Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at the trailhead located at 308 W. Commercial Street (Cass County Fairgrounds).

Help us celebrate this important trail day and honor those who have helped to make it possible. Please also plan to join the Governor on the trail following the ceremony.
