Doesn't Midwest know we don't have enough eating options at KCI?
On your ticket there is a warning to those traveling to KC.  "WARNING!  KCI SUCKS!  DON'T LET YOUR INITIAL IMPRESSION OF KC BE RUINED BY THE AIRPORT!  ENJOY OUR MOUTH WATERING CHAIN RESTAURANTS AT VILLAGE WEST.  SKIP UNION STATION AND GO DIRECTLY TO JOHNSON COUNTY"

There.  That should do it.

maybe they're biding their time while travel is down.  Don't know why the dollar beer business model would fail

or that advertising on overhead bins couldn't turn around their balance sheet.

not a flight adjustment announcement, but has anyone used the southwest early bird check-in? is it worth the $10 each way?

I think it depends on where/when you're flying.  I've always used the 24-hour early check in (free) and I've always been an "A" boarder.  But I also usually check my bags, so it's less important to me to get the overhead bin I want.

I thought SW was going reserved seats earlier this year, what happened?  I don't like the cattle lineup method.  And always forget to checkin online beforehand.  When I order my tickets, I want to make sure I get an aisle seat.

Whaa? No I don't think Southwest will ever go reserved seats (thankfully, I say). They did change the boarding process a little, giving you a letter and a number instead of a just a letter, but that was a couple years ago.

What's there to like about being treated like cattle?  There's no benefit to this method that I can see.

Everyone gets on the plane faster, for one.  And fares stay lower, for another.  Every single thing that SW does is oriented toward minimizing the amount of time that the plane is on the ground.  That's how they continue to make money, even with relatively low fares.  Don't think that the "bags fly free" thing is just out of the goodness of their heart.  The more bags people bring onto the plane, the longer it takes to board.  Similarly, when people have assigned seats, there is a lot of getting-up-and-sitting-down and where-is-my-seat and back-in-the-aisle and can-I-squeeze-by and can-you-fit-my-bag-in-there nonsense.  With SW, you get in and you sit down.

I don't notice any difference in boarding times for either method.  Another problem is some go all the way down looking for an aisle or window seat then have to go back for a middle seat.  I'd be surprised if that is what SW considers to be the benefit.  They had an announcement last year that they would do assigned seating in early 2010.  Wonder what happened.  Maybe it's just delayed.

Even if there is a benefit to SW, does anyone actually prefer it as a passenger?  We're being treated as cattle.

It seems to me like it would be easier to find your seat if one was assigned vs. the SW model where people try saving seats on a full plane, people are trying to find a certain type of seat, etc.
