Lewis and Clark (Intercity) Viaduct

Post by TheLastGentleman »

Didn't see a thread about this, so here we go.

I took these pictures of the construction of the new westbound lewis and clark bridge from Kaw Point.

What's cool is that the piers look kinda stylish. However, they match this plan....

....which sees the total replacement of the eastbound portion. What makes it such a bummer is that the interesting steel latticework surrounding the pedestrian trail below (one of the draws of the path IMO) would be gone, replaced by a simple strip of concrete.

If the bridge has to be replaced, it seems like the perfect candidate to be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere, similar to the freighthouse bridge to union station.

That's a bummer. The cathedral-like effect of that structure has made it a great spot for wedding photos (and graduation, and senior, and others).

We biked over to Kaw Point Park today, too. Perfect day for it.

This is now 10 months past schedule, for a 34 month closure.

It's a good example if someone says a freeway can't be closed
