2014 Predictions

Post by KCMax »

If any of these are wrong, I will personally pay for a free yearly subscription to KC Rag for each and every one of you.

Local

KC does not land the 2016 GOP Convention, losing out to Phoenix.

Plans are finalized for a downtown convention hotel nonetheless, near the Power and Light District with Cordish and Omni.

Another business tries to build a drive-thru inside the loop, but is rebuffed.

The UMKC Downtown Arts campus selects 17th and Broadway as their new site and breaks ground.

A Kansas company announces it is relocating to the Flashcube Building in the north loop.

Sprint buys T-Mobile and rumors grow louder that the company may move its HQ to California.

Kansas does pass a gradual elimination of the state income tax.

National

Obama makes ending poverty his central theme of 2014. It goes nowhere and Congress does almost nothing the entire year. A minor immigration reform bill passes, but that is all.

John Boehner announces this will be his last term as Speaker of the House.

The stock market takes a hit, showing 2013 was a minor bubble that bursts in 2014. It rallies towards the end of the year with strong retail numbers and with umemployment continuing its downward slide.

In mid-term elections, Republicans pick up two Senate seats, but the Dems retain a slight 51-49 majority. Democrats pickup 5-8 House seats, but the GOP still has a decent majority. Many incumbent Republican governors lose however, including in Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, Michigan and our own Sam Brownback in Kansas.

President Obama has a minor scandal involving one of his current or former staffers, lets say Valerie Jarrett or Rahm Emmanuel.

Entertainment

"12 Years a Slave" wins Best Picture at the Oscars. Robert Redford wins Best Actor. Cate Blanchett wins Best Actress.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian announce they are splitting up.

Sports

Royals finish 85-77, far back of Detroit, and 5 games out of a WC, but are in contention much of the year. Ned Yost is fired at the end of the year and replaced by Bob Brenly.

Chiefs defeat the Colts for their first playoff victory in 20 years. They lose badly in the second round to the Broncos. In the first round of the draft, they select a wide receiver. The team goes 9-7 in 2014 with a tough schedule, missing the playoffs.

KU hoops makes the Final Four, losing to Arizona. Mizzou makes the Sweet 16. KSU loses in the first round of the NIT. Wiggins is the #2 player taken in the NBA Draft, behind Jabari Parker of Duke.

After a 2-10 season, Charlie Weis quits as KU football coach. Mizzou goes 8-4, KSU goes 6-6.

SKC has a transition year and fails to make the playoffs. MLS announces they are expanding to Atlanta.

An ownership group comes forward in Kansas City to say they are interested in bringing an NBA or NHL team to Kansas City, but no one takes them very seriously, and the NBA awards a franchise to Seattle, not even considering Kansas City.

KC Rag:
The new hosting will work great and Raggers will be pleased. Still, bahua won't be happy and invents something that makes the forum run faster than Google Fiber by the end of year.

msgsports will keep us updated with how that Quiznos will be converted into a Subway.

In December of 2014, we will look back on these predictions and someone will start a "2015 predictions" thread.

Kansas City:
KC loses out on GOP convention.

Kyle James will continue to make us laugh.

KCI makes big push to move to a single terminal.

Plans for the convention hotel do not move forward.

Kansas City will experience some kind of "unique event."

Plans for better light right & mass transit overall do move forward.

Rumors surface that Sprint is moving their HQ, though nothing happens in 2014.

Power & Light District will show signs of struggling as it is difficult to keep a place open there.

National:
Obama's approval rating will continue to drop.

Publican opinion shows the Affordable Health Care Act is seen as a disaster from the start.

Feeling pressure and worried about their Senate seats, Democrats urge Obama to postpone some the Affordable Health Care Act's most crippling measures until after the mid-term elections.

Basically, no major changes after the elections. Democrats gain a few house seats, though the House stays heavily in Republican control. Republicans gain 1 or 2 Senate seats, but the Senate stays in Democrat control.

Gas prices stay about the same, in keeping with their annual trends.

Something will happen, somewhere.

Sports:
ROYALS: Finish with winning record, but still fail to make the playoffs.

CHIEFS: After losing their playoff game @ Indy this season, the team goes 7-9, 3rd in AFC West. The 2014 schedule will prove to be too difficult.

SPORTING KC: Will have a winning record, but will fail to make playoffs. They have nowhere to go but down.

KANSAS: Just misses the Final Four, but still an impressive season for a "down" Kansas team. Football team goes 3-9.

KANSAS STATE: Just misses the tourney. Football team goes 8-4, loses bowl game.

MISSOURI: On the bubble, they make the tourney and go one-and-done to some team I've never heard of. Football team goes 6-6, loses bowl game.

KC Rag

* Improves its appearance, but still stinks in mobile browsers.

* Implements a reddit-esque self-moderation system so that posts containing spam or other nonsense no longer have to be manually deleted by moderators.

* Puts on the first ever KC Rag OMG COME DRINK BEER AND EAT BBQ WITH RAGGERS festival, wherein bahua and mean clear the room and instigate lawsuits by dancing on tables in their underpants, and KCPowercat doesn't show up, maintaining the mystery of whether he really exists. We can make it happen!

Local

* Chiefs and Bengals win in the first round, but Chiefs lose to Patriots.

* Royals shock the world by losing the world series! (Ok maybe not)

* Swift progress is made on the streetcar line now that all the lawsuit nonsense is over. Sue and Stretch fail to move their businesses.

* Sporting KC makes the playoffs but fails to repeat as champs.

* Boulevard makes a modest international splash in overseas markets, particularly in the UK.

National

* Obama's rating goes up.

* Republicans gain a senate majority, and with majorities in both houses play "FU Obama!" even more hardcore than we've seen up to this point, possibly even going so far as impeach him, because why not? If they do impeach, no way do they get 2/3 majority in the senate to convict. The obstructionism and potential impeachment circus contribute to Obama's rising rating.

* Seahawks make the Super Bowl, and to celebrate create a rap video for a song entitled Seattle Swaghawks, in the tradition of the Super Bowl Shuffle. They go on to beat the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

* Kanye West does something incredibly stupid.

LOCAL:
There are further attempts to reduce or eliminate the incentive border war between the two states. But it all falls apart when a large major employer sends out feelers looking for a new place of business.
Progress is made on the streetcar expansion but trouble arises when details about how to finance come to light.
The number of murders decreases slightly in KCMO.
Jimmy John's with its drive thru is built downtown.

SPORTS:
The Royals are in the middle of the pennant race and add a pitcher and hitter before trading deadline passes. They do make the playoffs but falter in the league championship series.
The Chiefs fall back some by only winning 10 games but still make playoffs. A win in the first round is followed by a loss in the second round.
Sporting KC has a good season but just good enough to make the playoffs and lose in the first round.
KU BB team does not win the 2013/14 Big 12 season champs nor the post season tournament but does make the NCAA tourney but losses in the second round.
MU BB team plays strong in the SEC but does not win the SEC crown nor the post season tournament. Loses in the Sweet 16 round.
K-State finishes higher than KU in the Big 12 season and eliminates KU in the post season tournament and also loses in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA.

NATIONAL:
Obamacare starts slowly and becomes a top political issue in 2014 elections. Its slow start is due to a lack of young signups. Mainly those who signed up were those who did not have insurance but needed insurance for various health reasons.
The GOP increases its majority in the House by 5 to 10 seats and wins a 51/49 majority in the Senate. The GOP is helped by the ACA but also the moderates take back some control of the national party when many of the GOP decides it is better to win the general elections than to have the right wing side win the primaries but lose the generals.
Another issue that helps the GOP is that there is some progress on immigration reform, enough that it does not become a major election issue.
Hillary takes further steps to make a 2016 run for the White House but an opponent from the left wing part of the party also starts a strong run.
Unemployment benefits are finally extended but more to the GOP terms than Dem terms.
After the 2014 elections Obama and the lame duck Dems come to terms with the GOP to help settle some issues before leaving office in order to have some say on the terms of the legislation. This also helps fuel the rise of the liberal left of the Democratic Party.

WORLD:
China's economy suffers a slowdown which strains the world's economy but not enough to put it into a tailspin.
The Sunni/Shiite conflict in the middle east spreads to make it more of a regional civil war within Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. Because of this Israel sees the need to come to some sort of agreement with the Palestinians to help keep its borders out of the conflict.
