2012 Predictions
Here's your chance to see how terrible you are at predicting things.
Local:
Jonathan Justus' new restaurant by the PAC is a big hit spurring a row of restaurants along Broadway (I think I've predicted this for three straight years)
Problems with financing and logistics scale back the initial downtown streetcar, but the project does get going. A large residential building is built at one of the major stops.
Mike Sanders finally drops his commuter rail plan saying "now is not the time."
KC lands a major tech company downtown, in large part because of the Google investment. Another major employer leaves downtown however, for Leawood.
The renovation of KCI is approved with a one-terminal format.
KCMSD is dissolved at the recommendation of the state board, and is divided up into neighboring districts.
National
Mitt Romney wins a fractious race for the GOP nomination. A large contingent of Tea Party Republicans make a demonstrative statement at the convention and walk out. "American Elect", a third party on the ballot on all 30 states, nominates Ron Paul for President. Sarah Palin also decides to run for President as an independent despite little campaign infrastructure and not being on the ballot in many states. After two months, she drops out. Barack Obama wins re-election with a plurality winning 47% of the popular vote to Romney's 44%, and winning all the states he won in 2008 except FL, VA, NC, IN and OH, giving him a slight 273-265 win in the electoral college.
Unemployment drops to 7.5% by mid-summer. The Dow goes on a bull-run fueled by a small rebound in the housing market.
Sports
Mizzou wins their first and last Big 12 basketball title, snapping KU's conference title streak. They are a #1 seed in the NCAAs, but lose in the Regional Finals. KU, a #4 seed, loses in the Sweet 16. KSU sneaks in as a #11 seed and loses in the first round. Ohio State defeats Syracuse in the finals.
The Royals acquire P Gio Gonzalez from the Athletics for P Chris Dwyer, IF Cheslor Cuthbert and IF Christian Colon. They get off to a hot start and by mid-June are in first place and are a national media darling. The team begins to swoon in August and ultimately falls short to the Detroit Tigers, but win 85 games, their most since 1989.
The Chiefs retain Romeo Crennel as head coach and hire Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator. They select Iowa OT Riley Reiff in the first round, but select a QB (Brandon Weeden?) later in the draft. Orton signs elsewhere and Cassel retains his starting job. Todd Haley becomes a full-time ESPN Analyst. The Chiefs go 11-5 and win the division, but lose to the Jets in the first round.
The NHL announces they have sold the Phoenix Coyotes to an investment group based in Kansas City and will relocate to Sprint Center for the 2012-2013 season. The team is renamed the "Outlaws."
Mizzou football goes 9-3 in their first season in the SEC, losing to Florida, Georgia and Texas A&M. Kansas goes 4-8 in their first season under Charlie Weis. K-State goes 7-5.
The first major active team sports athlete comes out of the closet and announces he is gay.

Re: 2012 Predictions
National Elections:
Romney survives and receives the GOP nomination for president.
A third organization selects a candidate who is more on the moderate side. Overall doesn't receive much support across the country but does make a differnce in the race.
The third party candidate does make it a close race between the Dems and GOP. Obama wins in a close race that the news organizations finally call mid-morning on Wednesday after the elections.
The GOP retains the House and gets a 51/49 split in the Senate.
Economy remains in a weak recovery mode so unemployment rate stays above 8%.
National, state, and local government budgets overall are still in trouble with fights between raising taxes and cutting spending.
The "Occupy" movement all-but-disappears but a more organized, focused protest movement takes its place.
Locally:
KS and MO continue the battle for employers. By the end of the year the net effect on job loss/gain for each state is just about equal. On the MO side most of the employers choose South KC or the Plaza.
With regards to companies choosing the KC metro for relocation no new employers make a decision but do announce the area is in the running for relocation.
Area economy improves at a rate not much greater than the national one.
The KCMOSD is operated by the state and the current board is dissolved. By next school year less than a thousand students leave district and charter schools for other districts.
Royals finish the season at .500 or a game or two above.
Chiefs do not hire Crennel nor do they hire a well experienced coach (GM would have to give up too much authority). New coach makes the Chiefs a younger team so Orton is not the Chiefs QB and the team finishes the season with 6 to 8 wins.
Sporting KC makes another run in the playoffs but does not make it to the league championship.
The new casino in KS shakes up the KC area gaming industry. Isle comes comes out the loser and almost closes its doors.

Re: 2012 Predictions
Kansas City:
KC moves to closer to landing an NHL/NBA team (probably NHL), though nothing get finalized.
Kansas will take a well-known company from Missouri.
Legoland and the Crown Center Aquarium open with flying colors.
KCMOSD will continue to embarrass itself and the city.
Sly James will continue to have a high approval rating.
We move slightly closer to better mass transit, but nothing official.
Overall, it will be one of the best years KC has ever had. There will be way more good things for KC than bad things.
National:
Romney is the GOP candidate.
Obama wins re-election.
There will be a major power outage (or at least it will be in a larger than normal area). It won't last long.
Unemployment stays above 8%.
Sports:
LSU over Alabama in the National Championship.
Packers over Patriots in Super Bowl.
The teams in the world series will be some-what from the same region.
More rumors surface about teams leaving the Big 12. Pac-12 makes some crazy news. Big 10 looks poor. Conference Realignment gets all kinds of crazy!!!!
Royals won't win more than 75 games.
With no help from the Royals, AL wins All-Star game at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City shines in national spotlight.
Chiefs will not have a winning season. The schedule will be too difficult. Romeo is the coach, Cassel the starting QB. Draft picks will be "questionable." (I'll make a better prediction when I see when they play certain teams).
Sporting KC again makes the playoffs and again misses the MLS Championship Game.
KU basketball: After having a "down year," KU gets an early exit in the tourney, misses Elite 8.
KU football: Might win as many as 4 games.
KSU basketball: Makes tourney, early exit.
KSU football: Has a great season, but still finishes just shy of BCS.
MU basketball: Will not win the Big 12 regular season or tourney. Make a great run in the tourney, but don't make the Final Four.
MU football: Finishes 7-5 (3-5) in their first year in the SEC, win Bowl game. (I'll make a better prediction when I see their full 2012 schedule).

How did you do?
Looks like this is not in the works now. Los Tules is doing well though. Still expect some restaurants to pop up.Jonathan Justus' new restaurant by the PAC is a big hit spurring a row of restaurants along Broadway (I think I've predicted this for three straight years)
We'll see tonight, but I feel good about this.Problems with financing and logistics scale back the initial downtown streetcar, but the project does get going. A large residential building is built at one of the major stops.
Hasn't dropped it, but I don't see any movement yet.Mike Sanders finally drops his commuter rail plan saying "now is not the time."
No tech company. Can't think of anyone else that moved to Leawood (AMC announced in 2011).KC lands a major tech company downtown, in large part because of the Google investment. Another major employer leaves downtown however, for Leawood.
Hasn't been formally approved but movement is headed that way.The renovation of KCI is approved with a one-terminal format.
Nope.KCMSD is dissolved at the recommendation of the state board, and is divided up into neighboring districts.
Romney won the nom, no Palin. Obama won by a larger margin than I thought.Mitt Romney wins a fractious race for the GOP nomination. Got down to 7.8% I think. Dow has been pretty steady, not sure if housing had much to do with it.Unemployment drops to 7.5% by mid-summer. The Dow goes on a bull-run fueled by a small rebound in the housing market.

No, but this seems kinda likely for next year with Shields instead of Gio Gonzalez. The Royals acquire P Gio Gonzalez from the Athletics for P Chris Dwyer, IF Cheslor Cuthbert and IF Christian Colon. No. I've given up on this. The NHL announces they have sold the Phoenix Coyotes to an investment group based in Kansas City and will relocate to Sprint Center for the 2012-2013 season. The team is renamed the "Outlaws."
Uh...no.Mizzou football goes 9-3 in their first season in the SEC, losing to Florida, Georgia and Texas A&M. Kansas goes 4-8 in their first season under Charlie Weis. K-State goes 7-5.
