18th and Cherry??? (Not a Demo I hope)

Post by ComandanteCero »

was just down in the area tonight, and noticed that the building on the north east corner of 18th and Cherry, a block east of Grinders is surrounded by barricades for about half a block.  It's the building that kept getting tagged with "Pigsty"  and other graffiti for some reason.

Considering what the owners of building next door did (adding a snazzy additional level, and completely renovating their building), I had/have high hopes that this building would/will follow suit.

I hope it's just some heavy renovation, and not demolition.  Anyone know?

Wasn't there a fire in that building?

There was no fire that I know of in that building within the last two years or so. The building is definitely coming down though. So far all they've done is some scrap recovery on the inside & some window removal. Interestingly enough, most of the workers seem to be wearing 'space suit' looking getups with respirators.

I thought that was a former linen laundry place?  I recall there was a fire that resulted in them having to move out.

Cintas was the last tenant, and I believe they also own the building. It was for sale for about 2 years, It is coming down, full of asbestos..gonna be a big lot for a long while is my guess..The building to the east is a discover center for drug rehab..major blight eyesore on the block and in the hood..cops there couple times a week and the owner (abnos/abdianna guy) lied about what was going in there.Said it was going to be battered womens shelter..which the neighbors ok'd.

Anyone know a good way to get some action going on this site? It's become an eyesore and no work has been done on the site for the past three months, maybe more.

Does the 311 hotline take care of this kind of stuff, or do they only deal with city-owned property?
