Question about registering my car
Question about registering my car
I'm in the process of moving downtown from Kansas. I haven't sold my house in Kansas yet, but I've already bought my condo downtown. I also just bought a new car and don't want to go through the hassle of registering and tagging my car in Kansas when I'm just going to have to transfer it when I physically move (hopefully within the next couple of months).
I tried to look up what's required to tag and register a new car in MO, but couldn't find specifically what I'm looking for since I'm both a new resident with a new car. I also tried calling them, but I couldn't get a human on the phone. So I figured you guys would know.
The title has my Kansas address on it. I don't have a MO driver's license yet. The website says I'll need a property tax receipt, but when and where do I pay that? Will I need to get my driver's license in MO first?
Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Question about registering my car
you'll need to have a checkbook, vehicle registration or title or vehicle paperwork from the dealer, sales receipt if you haven't got your first set of plates yet, personal property tax receipt from the past year and proof of insurance.
go here to find info. http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/motorv/
if you're dt and want to find a place to get your plates i would suggest that you don't go to a office dt and instead go to the license bureau that located inside of petco on burlington in north kansas city. the lines will be shorter and faster than if you go to a dt office.
you will need your personal property tax receipt from wherever you live in kansas. just to show them that you paid last year's in kansas and that you weren't a missouri resident on december 31st.
i wouldn't get missouri plates until you actually live in missouri and can show a utility bill from your residence in missouri. also i doubt if you could title and get plates for your car if you don't live in missouri. i would either get a kansas temp or just go ahead and get plates for your car in kansas if you're not gonna be living in missouri for a couple of months. also in kansas you can roll your sale tax into your payments in because they consider it as the total cost. in missouri the sales tax is separate and must be paid to the state when you first register your car. it will also help if you got your drivers license switched to missouri.

Re: Question about registering my car
One of the biggest differences to be aware of is that in Missouri you only pay the registration fee when you get plates. You pay personal property taxes at the end of the year. In Kansas you pay personal property tax at the time you get plates and/or renew your vehicle registration.
Re: Question about registering my car
Ok, I'm confused about the personal property tax. In KS, I paid 1 year of personal property on my old car in July. So, if I bring my KS personal property tax receipt, they'll take that to get my plates in MO? The rest of it I have unless they require you to have a MO driver's license, which they shouldn't I don't think. I've already got a few months of utility bills that I've paid at my dt condo, so that can be proof of residency, right?
So I'll just need to pay the sales tax and registration fees when I go get the plates...no property tax? That's kind of awesome. Thanks for the tip on where to go, I had been planning on going to the dt office.

Re: Question about registering my car
I went through this earlier this year, so I'm a bit foggy on the details. As I recall, I went to some county department (assessor?) that had the records showing that I had recently purchased a house and that I was not already a resident of the county. They then gave me a waiver form, which I showed at the DMV to get my plates.Angel wrote: Ok, I'm confused about the personal property tax. Re: Question about registering my car
I think that you will have to get an inspection done of your car also to register it in Missouri.

Re: Question about registering my car
You get a waiver of PPT liability from the county and take that with you to the license bureau.
If you can wait until after Jan 1 to get the waiver, I don't believe you'll owe property tax to MO until 12/31/09.
Here is the info from Jackson County on the process..

Re: Question about registering my car
Thank you, guys! That was exactly what I needed to know. Guess I need to go get my property tax waiver. I read on one of those sites that I don't have to get an inspection if it's a new car, so that's cool.

Re: Question about registering my car
Also be aware that in Missouri one has to place plates on both the front and back of the vehicle. This isn't a requirement in Kansas. Not having plates on both front and back can result in a ticket.

Re: Question about registering my car
And depending on your car, you might have to go to the dealership or to Home Depot to buy a drill and sheet metal screws. After we moved back to MO, I had to drill holes in the front bumper of my wife's car in order to attach the plate. I don't how many other states don't require front plates, but apparently there are enough that some automakers leave that task to dealers.FangKC wrote: Also be aware that in Missouri one has to place plates on both the front and back of the vehicle. Re: Question about registering my car
It's stupid in a bi-state Metro to have this difference. Half the cars in Kansas City, MO, during the day don't have two plates, and they can't be ticketed, but in-state residents can be. Stupid. Look at the design of many new cars and you will see that there isn't a place for front plates, and one has to drill holes in the fascia to accommodate the plates. My car didn't have one.

Re: Question about registering my car
I've never seen a car that didn't have the ability to have a front plate...maybe you should consult your dealer before drilling your own holes.
That being said, it is dumb to have front plates....if nothing else, for the cost.

Re: Question about registering my car
that is the most stupidest thing that I hve seen. You would think that states would want to keep costs down. To make 2 plates per car is a waste of money. Only 1 like Kansas does would save trmendous amounts of money. Even when most states are buying their plates from a Kansas factory (Center Industries Wichita, KS.)

Re: Question about registering my car
Hers is a 2007 Toyota Solara. There's room for a front plate. It just that the bumper isn't pre-drilled or equipped with a bracket. Makes sense. We bought it from Molle, which sells to both sides of the state line. If you live in Kansas, as we did at the time, you won't want your bumper sullied by holes or a bracket that you don't need.KCPowercat wrote: I've never seen a car that didn't have the ability to have a front plate...maybe you should consult your dealer before drilling your own holes.
Anyway, after we moved back to MO, I called Molle, and they said I could bring it in or drill it myself. It was faster and easier to do it myself.
Re: Question about registering my car
I've lived in MO for over 13 years now. Haven't put on my front plate yet. I have gotten 2 tickets from meter maids in that time, but it's a small price to pay to not have that ugly license plate messing up the front end of my car.
Re: Question about registering my car
I thought the KS side required that you place some sort of big 12 logo (preferably KU) on the front of your car
Re: Question about registering my car
I completely agree with Beermo. Go the MODOR office in the Petco building. Rarely a line. I love how Kansas you don't have a front license plate but they sure do wanna know what county you're from. I'm sure this helps law enforcement in Joco. Anyone with a WY or front license plate may as well be from Mexico.
Calling a spade a spade.
Re: Question about registering my car
yeah, If I lived in kansas (that would never happen) I would hate the fact that the initials of the county you live in is on the plate for your car.ShowME wrote: I completely agree with Beermo. Re: Question about registering my car
To be fair, Kansas isn't the only state that has that. AND they only have the initials. Most other states have the whole county spelled out. I know off the top of my head that Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, and Georgia do this also.schugg wrote: yeah, If I lived in kansas (that would never happen) I would hate the fact that the initials of the county you live in is on the plate for your car.
