Missouri used to have numeric codes for all of the counties.  I think this was for cheap, "local only" registrations you used to be able to get on farm trucks.

I don't know...I've lived in a few of those states, as well as Kansas, and I never even thought about - nor did I hear anyone complain about - the fact that my county was on the plate.  Of course, I've never lived anywhere where there was such county hatred by other counties in the same metro.  Weird, that.

Angel wrote: To be fair, Kansas isn't the only state that has that.  AND they only have the initials.  Most other states have the whole county spelled out.  I know off the top of my head that Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, and Georgia do this also.
don't forget florida who i believe also has the biggest selection of specialty plates. they have a plate for every pro team in the state plus a lot of colleges and the space shuttle challenger and manatees and....the list goes on and on. http://www3.hsmv.state.fl.us/Intranet/d ... lindex.cfm

in missouri the state has a deal where the pro teams can go thru a process to get their team on a plate, but for some reason they haven't done it.-Correction. the cards, blues and the chiefs have specialty plates. no royals though. http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/motorv/plates/

true, that.  but that is just the way it is over here.  like I said, If I lived in kansas I would hate it because everyone in the area notices it.

Yeah - I think folks from some of the less populated counties get excited when they see someone from the same area out and about in other parts of the state/country.  "oh look there is someone from back home . . . "

Colorado has to be right up there.  Good lord, they might as well just send everybody a white plate and let them paint it themselves.

i was pretty psyched when i saw a sorostitute-looking lass ineptly parallel-parking her land rover near chicago's gold coast, causing quite a traffic backup, honking, etc.  she was on the phone and wearing sunglasses at dusk.  i looked at her license plate for some reason and saw kansas plates with JO in the corner.  i was wearing a KC hat so i blithely waved at her, clearly indicating mockery.  pretty sweet.

Ohio had those, too.  They had kid lover plates, animal lover plates, bird watcher plates, homeless guys who like to pee on the corner plates...and so on and so on.  When I moved here, I thought it was interesting that neither Kansas nor Missouri has very many specialty plates.  Didn't I see that Missouri has a breast cancer plate?  I thought I saw them at the DMV when I went but I never see them on the road.

LOL  did she look like lindsay lohan?  that's why I would not want that on my plate but I can park and she may have had no clue about what "jo" stands for on her plate.

I like having the JO on the plates.  It makes it easy to know which SUVs to avoid, especially when I am walking or bicycling.

I checked into the Royals plate once and found out that the problems is a lack of interest.  Dept. of Revenue requires a minimum number of people commit to buying the plate before the will manufacture it.  So far, not enough people have signed up to buy a Royals license plate.

When I moved to Mo, I looked into getting plates from my undergrad alma mater just for shits and giggles.  Turns out that you have to provide the DMV with a letter from the institution verifying that you have adequately signed over a sufficient quantity of your income to said institution.  No wonder you don't see many of them on the road.

I'm thinking it is all the retirees that give this sort a business.

Call the dept of revenue in Missouri and ask what they want. I got tags for my car today, had everything the letter said to have, and they still wanted something else.

And I advise you, don't go to the office on 291 in Independence  next to Price Chopper. They're the devil.

Most of the specialty plates are fund raising tools.

Oh, yes...I already went through that nightmare.  It took me a whole day, 2 courthouses and 3 DMVs to finally get my plates.  Every place wanted something different, wasn't happy with how the dealer signed the title, wouldn't take my check, blah blah blah.  It was the most ridiculous experience I've ever been through trying to get plates for my car.  Calling ahead of time was a bust because no one ever answered the phone.  :?

But the Independence DMV is the place that finally got it done so I had a pretty good experience there.

There are two DMVs in Indep. I went to the one off 24hwy/Indep Ave.

The best one ever in my experience has been the Jeff City office. Now, that were fantastic! The dealer did something wrong on the title, so they called the dealer to clear up the confusion. Any other DMV would have sent you to figure it out.
