P&L district to host mixed martial arts events

Post by thesnowman21 »

Sounds quite cool

"In the shadow of Sprint Center, the Kansas City Power & Light District will hold four mixed-martial arts events that will be nationally televised.

The Cordish Co., the Baltimore-based developer of the downtown entertainment district, has formed a stregic venue partnership with Bellator Fighting Championships. The mixed-martial arts promotion, which airs on FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo, has agreed to bring four events to Kansas City this year, Cordish said in a release. The events will be shown live in prime time to 92 million homes, then condensed for later viewing.

The Kansas City events are expected to bring more than 1,000 hotel room nights and a projected net economic benefit of more than $2 million. The dates are April 29, June 24, Aug. 26 and Oct. 14.

The partnership is Cordish’s first with a sports organization to host nationally televised live sports events at any of the developer’s open-air, mixed-use venues, which are in various U.S. cities, the release said. But the parties are discussing expanding the partnership to other Cordish venues nationwide."

Looks like a lot of these guys are legit fighters.  Not like some of the scrappers I once saw at a show in Independence.

Anybody going?

He's getting up there in years obviously and judging by the mug shots you have to question his training dedication, but I always figured him for the sort of guy who could take a punch pretty well - just keep on staring at you with those intense eyes, hit after hit.

Yeah, he does seem like the kind of guy who take a punch or two.  Unofortunately, I'm not really sure this is a prized attribute in the MMA world.

I was driving through DT and past the P&L this evening.  Tons of guys who were obviously there for the MMA fights and also tons of teenage girls.  Guessing some sort of cheerleading or volleyball thing at Muni Auditorium.  I was thinking "this will not end well."

They really did a lot to showcase the KC Live area during this event. I find the courtyard visually underwhelming especially in the day light, but at least it showed an urban element of KC that most probably aren't aware exists.
