Attention bland white people: there are several houses for sale in my neighborhood.

I would call the grocery store, in it current configuration, a 50/50 accommodation between peds and cars.

Cars will come in and buy up several bags of groceries. Checking out will take more time with bagging and loading. Pedestrians might come in and grab what fits in their tote bags, check themselves out and hit the street. When I shop in the City Market (being useless and white), I buy what I need for the next meal or two. That is how urban grocers work. Thus, the capacity at the front of the store, in terms of the number of people, is essentially equal -- it it just adjusted to the unique circumstances that will occur in both scenarios.

So why are these people your targets? Why not rail on JoCo or something? The River Market battles the same stereotypes as any urban neighborhood when it comes to outsiders. These folks aren't running from the city and choose to live an urban lifestyle. They contribute to the tax base and do more than most.

Many of my useless white friends in the neighborhood volunteer as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Youth Friends, etc. Others volunteer at recycling centers or by building habitat homes. Others work as neighborhood advocates. I personally represent neighborhoods all the way to Prospect on the city's Neighborhood Advisory Council, despite my preoccupation with wine, art and my bicycle.

Many of us on the forum work very hard and care very much for the city and its neighborhoods. We actually live here and invest in our city. I don't know what your issue is with the River Market, which seems to be your specific beef at the moment, but I'd suggest you come for a visit sometime.

Besides, living in Lawrence doesn't do a whole lot for the inner city, now, does it?

I would also like to point out that other urban grocery stores have the exact same set up as the cosentinos.

I was in Atlanta this summer for a wedding.  Midtown.  Two blocks from our hotel was a condo tower with a grocery store in its main level.  On our way to the rehearsal dinner, we drove into the Condo parking garage, parked our car, walked into the urban grocery store, and to all of our amazement, there were cash registers at the parking garage entrance.  There were also registers at the street level entrance.

Nobody was shocked.

Then again, my friends and I are all white.

I have tried to keep quiet on this but can't any longer.  On this subject I think that TK is all wrong.  There are no racist or suburban perceptions about the number of checkout points and locations.  It is all about where they believe (at the time of design) where the business will be and how long it will take to accomodate that business.

Not knowing the exact numbers but will assume that 50 people wish to ckeck out at each location.  Given the amount of groceries and other items these customers are buying it is quite possible that, given that all registers are staffed, that both crowds of 50 will be accomodated in the same amount of time.  Why?  Because those who use the front of the store will be walking some amount of distance and therefore have fewer items and require less time to check out.  Those who are driving we can assume will likely be purchasing more items and therefore require more time to check out.

If, after time, the owners do find out that adjustments have to be made they will make them.  I have shopped at various grocery stores over my lifetime and adjusting and moving checkout locations has been done at all of the locations.  Reasons have been many - adding quick lines for 10 items or less, adding self checkouts, changing the type of shopping carts, changing the type of cash registers, remodeling store, and so on.
I may be right.  I may be wrong.  But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

I'll chime in to say I'm incredibly excited about the grocery store for the following reasons:

Boar's Head Meats - love them, only see them at Hen House

Proximity to our normal weekend routine  - down to City Market, breakfast at Cascone's or Mama's

Hopefully better selection - while I love the Roeland Park Price Chopper (they carry the local cage-free brown eggs I prefer) I find myself having to make a trip to various other stores (SunFresh for lamb, shatto milk, fennel bulbs, better herb selection, Whole Foods for Fage Greek Yogurt, grass-fed and finished beef (though we do buy it at the City Market when the vendor is there) artisinal cheeses and meats) and I'm hoping this store will carry all those things in one place.

Tuesday, January 6, 8 AM

I seriously think there should be an iPhone style line outside this place the night before. Maybe I'll come down there on the bus with a sleeping bag and show everyone how to do it.
