Develop the area around the TSC?

Post by KCMax »

Now that we're committed to the TSC for the next 25 years, what ideas does everyone have for developing the area around the stadiums? Is it feasible? What are the logistical problems? Is it a good idea or are we stretching ourselves too thin? Is it worth doing? What about mass transit from the stadium, should that be improved?

if we can land a major retailer (I keep throwing out Ikea) I think it's possible.  Let's not throw up a "new" strip mall just to have something.

I think we have to wait to see what will be done at the stadiums...if a restaurant is added to the back of Kauffman and will be an attraction for game and non-game days, we have something to build with.

Not going to happen.  They city cannot afford the incentives it would require.

What the TSC needs is a big, big shopping center with a Wal-Mart and lots of parking!!!

The stadiums are surrounded by 22,000 parking spaces.  It makes no sense what so ever to force retail development "around" the stadium, which would be along Blue Ridge or something.

A suburban office park across I-70 is about the only thing that could happen there.

I think a grocery store inside the parking area of the TSC would be a great idea. Keep it affordable so people can buy fresh foods at the game instead of dragging it in with them. Great for tailgating.I could stay open almost year round with the Royals/Wizards/Chiefs playing games .

The only problem with utilizing the parking lots, is that they'd either have to be free, or these stores would have to be closed on game days. I can't imagine people paying $8 to park at an IKEA.

It would be cool if they built some kind of development next to the stadiums, but I imagine the teams would hate that eating into their parking profits.

And I think they are with the renovations.

There is not going to be a speedway retail area across the street.  That already exists five miles down the interstate at 470.

Stadiums don't generate retail activity, they just don't.  They actually detract from it.

It would be nice to remove the nasty homes on the hill north of 70 though that make KC look like a hillbilly town from the upper deck of Kauffman and put in a few hotels or office buildings.

Now a highrise hotel between the stadiums over looking them would be cool.

Yeah, that would be cool, but won't that get in the way of the roof.....that we still might get (somehow)?

There is enough money to build a retractable roof on Arrowhead in that tax.

We could paint a 1000 ft wide mural of the skyline as seen from crown center out next to 70....
the only thing for sure is change.

Oh well,

I think it's very clear that we might get an IHOP around the TSC.

I wouldn't bet on anything else, the place is a dump, and Question 1 was a dump... but, the people have spoken, if they want to foot all the bill, that's their business... at the very least, we have 25 more years of pro baseball and football.
