KC wants to be NCAA Championship destination

Kansas City wants to become an NCAA championship destination
Nelson said Kansas City expects to cast a wide net for championship events and would love to land at least one major championship a year. Proposals will be coordinated from the sports commission office and will include partnerships with the city’s professional sports teams and area colleges and administrators.

For instance, Kansas City plans to bid for the Division II football championship, working with the Kansas City-based Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and Sporting Kansas City....

Kansas City is interested in those championships and others, such as Division I soccer, ice hockey and track and field — perhaps at Kansas’ new track stadium under construction. There’s also interest in luring the Division II sports festival, an Olympic-style series of championships.

In the fall, the festival includes men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball — bringing hundreds of athletes to one site over a few days. Orlando, Fla., Louisville, Ky., Birmingham, Ala., and Houston are among the cities that have played host to festivals for either fall, winter or spring sports since 2004....

The men’s and women’s Final Four won’t be part of the timeline.

KC's 14 championships are more than any other city - Louisville had 13. If you include the champsionships awarded to Lawrence, it's even more impressive.

If NW Missouri played in the D2 championship wonder if they would move it to Arrowhead.

There's a comprehensive list on the NCAA website.

Yeah, i found it, I think KC really got a lot of the good sports. It would have been nice to see them land a NCAA Hockey Regional or a Wrestling Final but overall this is the best one of any metro.

Can't imagine their opponent would be very happy about that.

Pretty cool that KC won those events. Hope the NCAA isn't think that KC will be content and now they can give the NCAA tourney destinations to other cities.

Where will Tennis be played?

These things also are scheduled out way in advance. I don't think you can schedule Arrowhead a week out.

I think they'd rather have a sold out Sporting Park than a 3/4th empty Arrowhead anyway.

Don't think we got tennis. Not sure where that would have been. Maybe The Plaza? And then downtown to Barney Allis for the finals?

OK. Thought I saw it on KCMax's post a few posts up. As a tennis fan - I'd love to see a few NCAA championship matches.

They unsuccessfully bid on Div II tennis. It was to be played at the Plaza and Homestead Country Club in JoCo.
