Town Center Plaza.
 Brilliant! But we should rename it Town Centre Plaza to further enhance its cosmopolitan flavor.

1. venues.
London is showing how to reuse and build temporary and build smart. KC could put an equestrian facility in Swope Park. There's be something temporary in Loose Park, say Archery. We'd use regional buildings like the Independence Events Center for events like wrestling or badmitton. Swope could hold BMX too, there's already mountain biking paths there. Waterworks Park could hold shooting in an outdoor facility. We've already held a major cycling event in the city and a marathon every year.

Sailing could be at the Lake of the Ozarks. There could be a real whitewater in the hills above it (controlled environment, real landscape).

2. parking. One thing of note is every Olympics city either has a train system, is building one or is upgrading one. Even Sochi, Russia (340K) is building. Parking isn't something that's common in places that hold the Olympics, they have transit networks instead. The city could ban parking for anything not official and force spectators to use transit. charter busses to bring people from outlying spots like they do for the Air Show.

3. athlete quarters and hotels. London is gaining more than 2000 new homes after the games. KC could do the same. Don't build new hotels, build temporary hotels and sell the space to people later for homes and businesses. Partner with big chains to run the temporary hotels

4. space for an arena. Go look at just north of 32nd and there's a huge space for a big temporary arena with views of downtown.

5. roads. easily solved by making certain roads express roads. like turn off cross traffic on SW Blvd and force local traffic to Broadway.

I forgot before about the Olympic stadium, which is the one venue that probably couldn't be done on the cheap. I'm not sure what else is held there besides the opening and closing ceremonies and the track and field (which is a lot!), but that would be a venue that you would probably ultimately want to host the Royals or the Chiefs. We wold probably be looking at a time frame where one or both of those franchises would be looking for a new home. How it would be configured, I'm not sure. Looking at picture of Montreal and Atlanta, Montreal was just out of the age of the multi-use donut, and kind of looks like it, and Atlanta, you can see how it was built with the intention of turning it into a baseball stadium. It looks like half track and field, half baseball.

My concern would be more that the residents of KCMO in Jackson County, with its' higher population of lower-income residents in the Metro, would end up financing the facilities for the games. Scarce funds would be diverted for the games that need to be spent on other more pedestrian purposes like infastructure. The City and County would end up in debt with little economic gain.
I get what you are saying. This is something that would probably require a bi-state tax district, and a number of facilities in both states. If we got on it, maybe we could get a bi-state tax going for drawing an Olympic bid in the future that would start on getting the infrastructure (rail and what-not) in place now. Who am I kidding? This is Kansas City! What are the chances we could get enough people to support even attempting to bring the gamed here?

Some misc info about the London Games

The Olympic Park is nearly 1 sq mile in size (500 acres)

The Park contains 8 of the 34 venues used for the Games

Built a high-speed train to ferry 25,000 passengers an hour from central London to the Park in East London in 7 minutes

4,500 homes will appear after the conversion of the Olympic Village

300,000 wetland plants and 10 football sized fields of wildflowers planted in the Park

A 1,500 seat McDonalds was built in the Park

46,000 workers built the Olympic Park

The Olympic Park is expected to have 12,000 new jobs

The largest urban shopping center in Europe was build next to the Olympic Park

If held in KC metro some time in the future where would one build the Olympic Park and Village given their size for these Games?

Always thought NKC would be a cool place to have it. Even if we were going to have a more dispersed model, at the very least have the Olympic Stadium and other key sites (aquatic center comes to mind) there.
Move all the displaced industrial, businesses, and relevant railyards to the area by Argosy Casino. Everything north of Armour would remain intact, if probably a bit spiffed-up (something which would probably happen with Burlington/HoA Bridge in general).
Convert at least one of the rail bridges to ped/bike (maybe a future extension of the Katy Trail).
Considering that the terrain of NKC is pretty much as flat as can be, one could probably get creative of what to do with the area. Hell, crisscross it with canals all Venice/Amsterdam-like (with a touch of some wetlands) for aesthetics and to spread out the Missouri's flow for flood mitigation.

With that, a lot of the support could possibly be coming directly from across the river in DT, River Market, etc.
Possibly, for both the sake of infill and to put it near easy access to get around, have the Olympic village be that giant spot south of Riverfront Park (unless something is already planned for there).

Yes, and, like I stated prior, HoA itself would be spiffed-up some more.
What I was intending was to have a fully-dedicated ped/bridge that is part of an extensive trail set-up. Those old rail bridges not only provide a nice setting, but rail-to-trail initiatives have strong backing.
On top of that, we would now have a ped bridge to possible serve as a section for the marathon event.

After watching sprints, I am well convinced that, Olympics or no, KC should get an indoor velodrome if only for just how awesome those facilities are.

2024 Olympics in St Louis?

Post by kcjak »

So the USOC sent letters to 35 cities yesterday to gauge interest in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. This short blurb from the StL paper takes a dig at KC for not being asked, but apparently the USOC isn't too stringent on it's list of 35 cities being able to meet some of the criteria like a minimum of 45,000 hotel rooms (Rochester, Jacksonville, Tulsa).
http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/colu ... 7cefe.html

And the list of cities:
http://www.teamusa.org/News/2013/Februa ... etter.aspx

Seems a little baffling that a Summer Olympics would be held in some place like Phoenix or Las Vegas and that Columbus would receive a letter but Cincinnati, which has shown interest in the past, did not. Personally, I'd like to city a joint KC/StL bid, with the cities joined by high speed rail :D

Hey, if St. Louis is interested in losing a ton of money and being stuck with facilities that will be difficult to reuse after the event is over, I say go for it. :D

Denver would be a great spot for the winter olympics. They have submitted bids before but I think they just turned them down once they were accepted.

The perfect and only place the Summer Olympics should be year and and year out in the US is LA. It has the space to handle it, lots of facilities already in place, most of the athletes already train or live there and the weather is perfect.
