Big 12 Tournament

Post by AllThingsKC »

So, right off the bat, there are 2 things that concern me about this year's tournament being as successful as past years:

1. This is the first year there will only be 10 teams instead of 12. That format means 60% of the teams won't play on the first day. There's only one "all-day tourney" day, Thursday. The other days only have games in the evening. I don't know how the new format will affect the crowd, businesses, etc.

2. The weather for the last part of this week is expected to be to rainy/stormy. On the busiest day of the tournament, Thursday, there's an 80% chance for storms. Hopefully, something happens and the weather won't be that bad.

So, new format + bad weather = I'm slightly concerned about this being a success (compared to other years).

Yea, but the four best fanbases to ensure success in KC are four of the top five seeds - KU, Mizzou, Iowa State, K-State. And KU and Mizzou are the top two and big favorites to be in the finals. That's like KC's perfect scenario.

True. No argument from this corner.

But, that also means that Wednesday is pretty much going to be a dead day. 60% of the teams won't be playing that day. And the 4 teams that will play are among the fanbases least likely to come to KC for the tourney. So, I guess my overall concern is just losing an active day.

New format sucks. Should have moved it back to Thursday through Sunday. Wed will not be busy. Other days will be fine. Weather seems to have little effect on it although it does kill the fanfest on grand. Weather sucked just like this last year.

We had bad weather last year, but we also had the old format. My concern is having bad weather + the new format.

Overall, I think everything will be fine, all things considered. It would just be great if we had good weather so that it wouldn't be a factor.

I don't think its much of a factor at all. Pray for no rain. That would be great.

The tourney concludes on Saturday so the results can be taken into account by the NCAA selection committee. That was the argument for moving it forward; it didn't have much meaning being concluded hours before the tournament selection came out. A lot could ride on the results....a bubble team going to the final or winning the whole thing, Mizzou winning and getting a #1 seed, etc....

Feel free to post pics here of tourney goings-ons.

Big 12 tournament tickets are sizzling
The conference keeps between 1,500 and 2,000 for internal use, most of which go to corporate sponsors. Some of the remaining 5,000 go to suite holders, and last month the Big 12 offered a public sale. Those tickets were gone in five hours, said Big 12 senior associate commissioner Tim Allen.

“Sometimes there are soft sellouts where the promoter might have tickets returned,” Allen said. “This is a hard sellout. There aren’t any tickets.”

Vandals Break Windows at Sprint Center
Investigators are trying to figure out who broke two large windows at the Sprint Center. The damage leaves the arena with two black eyes of sorts as the Big 12 Tournament is set to begin.
The two windows weigh about 2,000 pounds and are located on the sixth floor of the building.
“We wanted to repair this situation as quick as we can,” said spokesperson Shani Tate. “We’ve been very fortunate that no one was hurt.”

That's ridiculous. Why can't we stake this out and catch these idiots.

This kind of thing has never happened during an SEC Tournament!!!

Well, except for this one little thing in 2008.

So, worse things have happened.

That high up, during high winds, didn't break the interior glass. Sounds like wind damage to me. Didn't look like gun shots and I don't understand what else it could be.

Police have not taken a report so foul play may not be involved.
