The way they handled the Jamar Samuels matter, the way Currie made no attempt to keep Martin, and Martin's admission of giving players money as a HS coach makes me wonder if Currie thought Martin was going to get them on probation.

Lon Kruger says he's not interested, but assistant Steve Henson (a KSU grad) is!

How about the Wichita State coach? Might be an easy transition.

Easy transition? Not following what that means.

If the coach is already recruiting to the middle of Kansas and seems very successful, I would think it would be easy to move solid recruits and assistant coaches up the road to KState at a better conference.

The move would be a downgrade :)

Really? I'm used to people criticizing Pastner for being in over his head at Memphis. Regardless, Pastner makes $1.7 million a year at a hard-core basketball school with a better program that will soon play in a better conference, so it's not happening.
My bad. I must have been looking at last year's salary. He was at under a million then. And as far as being in over his head goes, he was 8th in Kenpom.com efficiency rankings this year. 6 of the 9 losses were to top 50 teams (4 to top 15). His team is more efficient on defense than offense (so he is getting talent to play D), and they were bounced in a really unfortunate 8/9 matchup where both teams were probably seeded worse than they should have been.

Gregg Marshall (coach at WSU) already turned down South Carolina, didn't he?

I never heard anything definitive about being contacted on the SC job, but he reportedly turned down the Nebraska job and just renegotiated his contract at WSU to $900K/year base salary. Seems to be happy in Wichita but never know what his dream job might be.

KU assistant and former Missouri State coach Barry Hinson is taking the head coaching job at Southern Illinois.

Danny Manning is also supposedly a favorite for the HC job at Tulsa.

And if anyone missed it, former KU player Jerrod Haase was named head coach at Alabama-Birmingham after years on the UNC bench.

The Star reviews potential candidates for the KSU job:

Scott Sutton at Oral Roberts (Sean's brother, Eddie's son) is a new name that has popped up as a candidate.

That's because I am bitter and jealous.

The whole Frank Martin thing has been a roller coaster. It is sounding more and more like he was becoming a liability, and that he was looking at SC as a way to preserve his career, which is surprising to me, but would explain why he would go there. This story (especially the rumors of six players demanding that either he leave or they do) fits with the evidence at hand. We can't really afford to lose either, but had we lost Angel and Spradling, next year would have been a total mess. As it is, if we get the right coach in, the pieces are there to have a nice run.

With that said, and the money we should be able to throw out there, I seriously hope that the days of hiring a Wooly are over. Jankovitch or Henson may turn out to be great hires, but with their resumes, they should be recruited for bargain pay, and we should be past the point of frugality. We need to pay about 2 mil on a home run hire now (keeping in mind that we don't want to spend 2 mil on a Turner Gill type of hire!).

So what exactly is the deal with the players threatening to transfer if Martin didn't leave? I always thought he was well liked by his players. This is confusing to me.

Sad to see Danny Manning leave KU. I always hoped he would just be happy with being a long-time assistant to Self, similar to Guthridge/Smith at UNC. I know he's done a great deal in developing our big men over the years, so I wonder how his departure will affect that part of the program. I'm happy for him though that he's getting this opportunity.

Because he yelled and made mean faces? I always that was just his schtick, and nobody really took it too seriously.

Think Marshall, Eustachy, and Pearl would all be good hires. Eustacy and Pearl know they have to be on their best behavior anyways...what about Alford from New Mexico?

Eustachy thinks KSU girls are too ugly.

Pearl can't recruit for 2 years...I don't think we're in that kind of desperation mode.

Marshall I have no idea on.

Alford was kinda kicked around but doesn't sound like he's the top of anybody's list.

I really have no idea....Tad Boyle interests me. Getting Kruger back would be cool. This Gottleib talk is humorous.

Mizzou's AD, Mike Alden, has now hired 2 COY candidates.

Frank Haith named AP's Coach of the Year.
Haith becomes the third Mizzou coach to win national honors, joining former coaches Norm Stewart and Mike Anderson in that group. Stewart twice won national coach of the year honors (1982 [UPI] and 1994 [AP]), while Anderson won the same distinction by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2009.
