NCAA board votes to allow autonomy
he NCAA Division I board of directors on Thursday voted to allow the 65 schools in the top five conferences to write many of their own rules. The autonomy measures -- which the power conferences had all but demanded -- will permit those leagues to decide on things such as cost-of-attendance stipends and insurance benefits for players, staff sizes, recruiting rules and mandatory hours spent on individual sports.

The Power Five (the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12) could begin submitting their own legislation by Oct. 1 and have it enacted at the January 2015 NCAA convention in Washington, D.C. Key early issues are expected to include full cost-of-attendance stipends worth up to $5,000 per player; four-year scholarship guarantees; loosened rules involving contact between players and agents as well as outside career pursuits for players; and travel allowances for players' families to attend postseason games.

honestly, why even bother having the football programs connected to universities anymore? it's not like most of those players at the top football schools want to go to class or are there to learn anything anyway. just make it a minor league, pay the players, and be done with it.

inference fail. missouri fan here. while i'll never discourage anyone from mocking or name-calling ku fans, it has nothing to do with this argument... well, my argument, at least, as i don't want to speak for anyone else.

there's so much money now in an amateur "league" that it makes a mockery of the whole system.

My guess is he violated team rules. He'll likely get picked up by a team that doesn't care if their athletes break the rules.

Big 12 researching possible candidates for expansion even before playoff snub
Big 12 officials recently met with administrators from the University of Cincinnati, a source close to the university told Sporting News. That is not an indication membership will be offered to the Bearcats in the immediate future — only that they would be a candidate were such an expansion to be undertaken....

BYU is independent and has a considerable following and already has an ESPN deal through 2018 believed to pay the school in the neighborhood of $1 million for every televised home football game. If the Cougars desired more defined access to the football playoff, it is possible ESPN would make some minor adjustments to its contracts with the Big 12.

I'm still pissed off that the Big 12 didn't act on Cincy and Louisville a few years ago when both schools wanted in.

Want a better laugh? Ask just about anyone who doesn't live in Dixie what their perception of the SEC is...

Yes, clearly the SEC is struggling with its perception.

Well, I was talking in terms of conference leadership as it pertains to football. But, if you want to talk about areas of the country, then yes, the south is the only part of the country that has a perception problem. It's a good thing northern areas like Ferguson, Cleveland, and New York don't have perceptions problems. HOW CAN THE ACC & B1G DEAL WITH HAVING SO MANY STATES WITH PERCEPTION PROBLEMS?

I do not think he meant in terms of college football. I'd agree that most of the states in the SEC do indeed suffer a pretty serious perception problem. Much of it deserved.
This is absolutely true. And most, if not all, of the states in the Big XII suffer an equally serious perception problem.

That's true - but they are different perceptions. B12 - flat and dull with a lot of tornadoes and some big time empty space. SEC: Abject poverty, good old boy corrupt politics, poor education, poor wages, institutionalized racism, flat and dull and humid (for the most part- the Appalachians are nice). Both are flyover country to most people who don't live there. Most big Midwestern cities do have the issue of being rust belt cities but that's St Louis too and KC to a much lesser extent. As ATKC noted - northern places like Ferguson have their issues but the key word in that sentence is "northern". Ferguson is in the north. Seems like northern schools should play in northern or at least Midwestern conferences where there population centers are both geographically and culturally proximal to the other schools in the conference. That's how all the great rivalries of college football/basketball started out.

Cannot imagine why. As a KU fan, I'd trade places with them in a heartbeat.

I can see NU fans maybe missing the OU rivalry and maybe some KC area NU fans who miss the local coverage/access, but what other reason (other than misguided nostalgia) could exist for any NU fan wanting to come back to this mess?

What's the money reason they would change back?

It costs a lot to redo everything around their major sports teams. So there must be a financial benefit to switching back.
