Say what you will about the South, but nobody retires and moves up North.
Retirees move south for several reasons: Warmth being first and foremost. People with lung issues and/or money move SW and those worried about having enough money to live out the rest of their lives move to Texas or the SE because the cost of living is low.
I live in Houston TX. I cannot wait to get out of this humid hell hole comprised of the rudest people and worst traffic I have ever come across, retire, and get back up north whether it's KC or somewhere else. For me, the US Gulf Coast is just a god awful place.
KC's biggest ally for keeping NCAA money local right now is KU. The strength of their program keeps the tournament in KC. Now that OKC has the NBA, their appetite for the tournament (and OU basketball) has withered and it was never very successful in Dallas giving KC a big edge for now - but OKC is growing fast and will eventually pose a renewed threat. BUT - it's only a matter of time that the B12 will quit KC due to the state issue. It's coming.
