If the team is able to attract several thousand attendees to its games, that would demonstrate a fan base and could help increase the city's chances to land a National Basketball Association team, he said.
The ABA is a hoot. There are nearly 60 teams in the league, including teams in Compton, CA, Hawaii, Owensboro, KY and a new team in Juarez, Mexico. They are also planning to expand...to Venezuela.
The original Knights drew quite well for its first home games. Even played a few games in Kemper when Walmart had the CC complex. Drew 5 to 6 thousand a game. Reason: cheap, cheap ticket prices. When the tickets went to the normal pricing the crowds (if you want to call it that) dropped to 1,000 or less.
If tickets are priced low (say a huge majority at $5 or less) then you might have a reasonable attendance. If the prices are high then UMKC will probably draw larger crowds and this new team might as well play in Independence or some large high school gym.
I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.
Kansas City Spartans (formerly the Knights) started playing again last season in the ABA. They played their games at Hickman Mills High School. Their website has been taken down now though....
The Kansas City Stars? So, when attendance drops, we will have TWO failing companies located downtown with the same name: The Kansas City Stars! Awesome!
I have always wondered what downtown would be like if it had a failing newspaper AND a failing sports franchise with the same name. Well, not really, but I still bet it would be awesome!
