Probably needs its own thread.   I have so many memories of sold-out stadiums, double-digit annual price hikes, disgusting tax grabs and of course:  mediocre football.

Carl Peterson to resign at end of season

Post by KCMax »

http://www.kansascity.com/385/story/937972.html

“On behalf of my family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization, I want to thank Carl for his two decades of service to the Chiefs,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. “Both Carl and I agreed that immediately initiating the search for the next Chiefs general manager would be the best thing for the future of the organization, and he will be resigning following the 2008 season.’’

no way it is a resignation either.

everyone not named maitre d, remember what life was like before carl took over at one arrowhead drive in 89. sure, marty was a HUGE part of it, if not the main part, but carl peterson was responsible for helping take us from a joke to a respected franchise. with dick vermeil in charge as recently as 3 years ago, the chiefs were a threat annually to win the west and make noise in the playoffs. dont act like carl sucked ass forever. the chiefs had success recently. sure, forever since a playoff win, but dick vermeil had us at the door twice, and even herm took the chiefs to the playoffs. all carl peterson hires.

i am tickled pink he got fired. not like he is some poor bastard factory worker that has nothing. this guy has some dough and is set for life. but i also think that in addition to being elated that carl, someone the game has passed by is gone, but that we should also thank the guy for taking us from shit to respectable and competitive. we were preseason picks to go to the superbowl by SI what, 3 times during carl's reign?

a lot of terrible draft picks, and the last 2 seasons were a joke, but prior to that, he also got a lot of shit right as well, and we should not be so quick to forget that. the chiefs did a lot better during carls reign then they did during jack steadmans reign.

Its funny you criticize the Jack Steadman tenure, because you could say the same thing in your post about Steadman. "Think about what life was like before Steadman! Sure he ran the team into the ground, but we won a Super Bowl!"

Wait, you can't even say that about Carl.

They weren't a threat to go to win in the playoffs or the superbowl. He did just enough every year to keep butts in seats and to keep the team respectable in the league. Most people knew that we didn't have the talent to bring home a championship....

So how much you wanna bet Denny Thum or Bill Kuharich replace Carl full time?

The attendance finally killed off Mr. Peter-less.   Clark knows the fan base is totally finished with the franchise and that Carl needed to leave or else, Arrow-Dead would be a tomb next year.

You wouldn't believe how thin it was, the last 2 games vs. New Orleans and San Diego.   Our home games this year (before yesterday) were all played in amazing fall weather, yet the Upper Tank was 1/2 full and the Club was about 1/3 full.

Carl averaged a 10-6 record in the 10 years with Marty.   And about 7-9 in the 10 years since.    That's all you need to know about his football "acumen".

oh please, the chiefs were like 9-7 without prior the last two years - 18 seasons of hovering near 10-6. 3 playoff appearances without marty. so quit acting like we have sucked ass all 10 seasons since marty left. we managed to have 5 winning seasons without marty, and a .500 year. so we have not been abysmal since marty left. under vermeil we had one of the best offenses the game has ever seen.

the game passed carl by, but he also did good things. with and without marty.

no playoff wins since Marty. Unacceptable.

I guess I am not near as cynical as some folks in this town about Carl's winning years.  I think he really did do a good job for a number of years and was one of the best in the business.  But he has made too many strategic mistakes the last few years that have cost us dearly.

totally agree. that is why i say the game passed him by. his ability to scout talent went straight to hell. he used to be better at it, no doubt. but yeah, way too many personel mistakes recently.

marty schottenheimer, general manager
bill cowher, head coach

my god, i fucken go crazy thinking of that.

I'msorry Lenexa, but Carl's tenure is a pretty big failure no matter how you slice it.   They won 3 playoff games in 20 seasons.   Seriously, think about that!   The Steelers won 4 in one month, a few years ago.

15 straight years without a playoff win?  Not one?   Seriously, given the NFL's parity system that is almost impossible to accomplish.   Having a computer simulator draft/build a roster, would surely result in a better outcome that that trash.

The Marty point is a critical one.  He left, and Carl was exposed.   Marty turned around a dreadful Redskin team to 8-8 his first season (before getting canned), then turned around San Diego.   He was largely (tho not totally) successful post-KC.    Carl, was not.

How many teams have been less successful in the past twenty years (in terms of playoff wins?)

1) Browns
2) Cardinals
3) Bengals
