Colorado 2010 II

Postby Roanoker » Wed Dec 19, 2012 9:18 pm

If pictures are missing, see them at http://www.flickr.com/photos/115393943@N05/collections/72157640327286316/.

Highlander suggested that I start a new thread rather than add more pictures to one that already has enough. We were finally done with
October 2, 2010. I took over 500 pictures that day, and you saw quite a few of them. It's a good time to go on to October, 3 with a new thread.

We are visiting an Arches visitor center, where various animals made of metal reside. I cut away the extraneous, unnecessary background.
Image

Moving on, we see tall, massive rock structures, serving as sentinels.
Image

We found a good place to eat lunch.
Image

We're in for a long trek.
Image

Here we go.
Image

The original picture was portrait-oriented. It's in the middle. The sides are made up of larger portions of itself.
Image

I think there is a rule that if you see a lizard, you have to take a picture of it. :)
Image

This looks like a slot canyon, but I don't think it is.
Image

We found a tree or two.
Image

We're not alone.
Image

A hole in one.
Image

Another view.

The rock hill is not blowing smoke. It is sitting under a wispy cloud.
Image

I wonder what we'll see when we get there.
Image

I like the light and dark contrasts in this one.
Image

And I always like what appears to be driftwood.
Image

Sometimes my son gets in the picture.
Image

Soft and hard.
Image

More rocks ahead.
Image

I guess we're there.
Image

There is nothing here for scale, but I remember that this was a really big hole.
Image

I didn't want to crop this shot in order to arrive at my desired 4:3 aspect ratio, so I added portions of the picture to itself at the top.
Image

On this one, I added portions of the picture at the bottom so as not to lose any rock detail.
Image

I added more sky to the top. Nice arch.

This shot gives you a better idea of the arch's size. I didn't know the lady under it.
Image

The familiar black branches.
Image

A giant sat on this pine tree.
Image

I took this picture of my son while I was standing under the big arch. He is in its shadow.
Image

And here he is standing under it.
Image

Now he is walking on an interesting path. (That tree is trying to grab him.)
Image

He is learning to share the path with others. :)
Image

Love that twisted wood.
Image

I tilted the camera a lot when I took this picture. Not sure why. I first rotated it back to "normal," but I like it better the way the camera caught it.
Image

Somebody threw away two perfectly good Dixie cups.
Image

I'm glad that whatever created these tracks did not greet me.
Image

The rocks on top have big noses. :)

Following the crowd.
Image

Staring at the sun, I guess.
Image

Dead wood.
Image

Rock people and real people.
Image

I like the flower/weed background more than the main picture.
Image

Those rocks in the distance look like a wagon train.
Image

We're making our way to the Landscape Arch.
Image

It was a long trek to the famous arch.
Image

We didn't follow the people to the top of the rock.
Image

There's the Landscape Arch.
Image

Closer.
Image

Odd rock.

Hiking to the Landscape Arch took a long time, so you'll have to see several pictures of it.
Image

Image

Image

Looks like two boats.
Image

Image

We were not alone.
Image

Portrait-oriented pictures are always a challenge.
Image

Image

Those asters be everywhere, and I'm glad. These look a little weather-worn, but they have character.
Image

Another challenge.
Image

Image

This is actually a portrait-oriented image, with a larger portion of itself on the right.

I learned the hard way that you must take water with you on these hikes.
Image

A son in the sun.
Image

There seems to be a natural attraction between mountains and clouds.
Image

Looks like a road atlas picture.
Image

Pretty rocks.
Image

Different landscape.
Image

I think the rock in the middle looks like the ancient Egyptian queen, Nefertiti.
Image

This place is called Park Avenue.
Image

I like the way this couple is shown emerging from the shadows.
Image

A closer view of an earlier picture.
Image

Rain?
Image

Maybe so.

More rocks to view.
Image

Almost in a dream.
Image

Baklava.
Image

High rise.
Image

Praying Mantis of the rock world.
Image

Nice scene.
Image

Gnarly frame.
Image

Lots of little flowers. Just in time for Valentine's Day!
Image

The clouds are trying to outdo the scenery.
Image

Road Atlas cover.
Image

Nice river.
Image

You can drive and view.

Another atlas cover.
Image

The river has a nice view.
Image

Notice the campers.
Image

Boat people.
Image

Nice river to navigate.
Image

Who is building those arches?
Image

It is a new day (October 4, 2010), and we have new things to see.
Image

Rocks and grass. I'm happy.
Image

My son, preparing to take a picture.
Image

Now he's just on edge. Don't slip!
Image

Where do the clouds end and the land begin?
Image

I had to sneak into a picture at some point.

Nice canyons.
Image

Image

Image

This almost looks like another planet.
Image

Image

Image

Found some flowers.
Image

Fascinating crack.
Image

Image

Image

Eventually, I'll get tired of this location. (You are not seeing all of the pictures.)
Image

No roller-skating on this!

Nice pictures of Canyondlands. The dirt road that winds into the canyon on one of your pictures is the White Rim Trail and is a great jeep - mountain bike trail. 100 miles of some pretty remote country - for both bikers and 4-wheelers, it's kind of a holy grail thing to complete it. As you might suspect, it's a lot easier in a jeep.

Thank you for the information and link, Highlander. It would be fun to take pictures while navigating that trail. I'm afraid such an endeavor would be way beyond my capabilities.

Here are this week's pictures.

Good thing you don't have to drive your car over these potholes.
Image

A sign says this is the Grand View Point Overlook. It is certainly a grand view.
Image

Image

Image

Notice my son standing on a ledge at the right.
Image

I have no idea who this person is, but he provides scale.
Image

Don't step back!
Image

Image

Holy rock.
Image

This is as close to flowers as I could get this time.
Image

Well, I thought it was interesting.

Used to be a tree.
Image

Notice my son standing on the ledge.
Image

You will see a hiker in a white shirt. If you follow the slope to the right, you can barely see my son standing on the highest point, on the horizon.
Image

Almost flower-like.
Image

Son is climbing back down.
Image

Canyon denizen.
Image

Oooo. Rain.
Image

You can see the whole storm!
Image

Another denizen.
Image

That cloud looks like the inside of a washing machine. Maybe it is.
Image

The rain provides a nice perspective.
Image

I think these fissures were caused by lightning strikes.

Continuing...
Image

General rain and a focused, narrow downpour.
Image

I do like that big crack in the earth.
Image

Everything seems at peace in this direction.
Image

We were not alone.
Image

Turned back to the rain and fussy clouds.
Image

The clouds try to outdo the magnificent scenery.
Image

Other people take pictures, too. :)
Image

Now I'm standing where they were, taking my picture.
Image

I think this is the Green River.
Image

It is easy to take a lot of pictures here.
Image

Now for something a little different. The mud-cracked ground.

I experimented with Photoshop more this week.
Image

These things look like buildings.
Image

It was fun to watch the rain slowly move on.
Image

More of same.
Image

One, lone little puddle.
Image

Note the winding road.
Image

I think a sign said this was an inverted dome.
Image

The play of clouds and sun created interesting lighting.
Image

Same place, another view.
Image

I think another sign said salt was involved in these piles.
Image

I like the lights and darks in this one.
Image

Can you believe this road? I like the way the background and "frame" turned out. And the color.

The day is coming to an end, so sun and clouds make for interesting lighting.
Image

This picture is superimposed on a larger version of itself. Now we have mountains in the clouds.
Image

Almost looks good enough to eat.
Image

Don't fall!
Image

Closer.
Image

Death wish.
Image

Swirly road again.
Image

Other people were there to enjoy the scenery, too.
Image

I took many pictures of this rainbow, but I will show you only one.
Image

Ominous clouds.
Image

I think we got wet.
Image

Eerie hole.

These are the last four pictures from the end of October 4, 2010. This one was taken from the passenger window. You can see rain spots.
Image

Tiny rainbow.
Image

I love these layers and the way the light affects each.
Image

A silhouette of sorts.
Image

The next 8 pictures start a new day, so it is a good time to start another thread, "Colorado 2010 III."
