Niagara Falls, August 2008

It is August 1, 2008, and we are approaching Niagara Falls, the primary destination of this entire trip.

I thought this was a city, but it is actually a group of hotels overlooking Niagara Falls. I snapped it from our car.


We followed the sheep and paid $20 to park. Do your homework and you can find a better place for less money.


I suppose there is historical significance to this place. I don't know what it is.


You can always find places to buy stuff.


A mix of old and new. I should have rotated this one a few degrees to the right. Sorry about that.


I bet the views of the Falls is spectacular from the top floors. We didn't stay in any of these hotels.


Here's a first hint of the falls beyond.


I was struck by the many extraordinarily beautiful flowers planted there for visitors to enjoy.


This is an entrance of sorts. I don't remember where it led.


The flowers are real. The background is fake. And I don't like it.


Nice landscaping. Good colors.

Nice pictures!  We were just there 2 weeks ago, we stayed at the Hilton, amongst those hotels you photoed.  The 21st floor view was indeed spectacular.  I'll post some photos, if you don't mind sharing the thread.

Did either of you venture to the Canada side? I remember that distinctly in 1965 when i visited.

I think we were on the Canadian side when I took these pictures. I'm horrible with exact locations. I just take pictures of things I think are pretty or interesting.

yes she was on the Canadian side, the US side is a big park area while the CA side is more a strip of parkway with some hotel districts

Wow! You went to places I did not. I'm the one who likes flowers, and I didn't know about the arboretum. And you went behind the falls! I suppose you got pretty wet.

the arboretum was a bit south of horseshoe, easy to miss I imagine, all the excitement is around horseshoe and the american falls.  Behind the falls and maid of the mist were the equivalent of waterpark rides, hence the blue ponchos you see in one pic, not very amenable to photographs!

Well, your venture on the side where I dared not go yielded that beautiful rainbow, a show-stopper.

No. Too chicken, I guess. I don't do theme park rides where I might get wet, either.

However, I *was* willing to walk through knee-high water in a slot canyon in Arizona with my son, who really knows how to plan a vacation.

I understand the hesitance to go on it, but it is pretty cool. I remember reading about one of those boats fishing out a kid who went over the falls a long time ago.  Tourists got their moneys worth on that trip.

You definitely get wet though!

I have yet to go to Niagara Falls. The only major waterfall I have been to is Multnomah Falls in Oregon.

Though frankly, I think I prefer the stature and aesthetics of a Angel/Multnomah-type waterfall to the sheer scale and volume of a Victoria/Niagara-esque waterfall.
However, the sheer complexity of Iguazu Falls trumps both types in my mind. That is one natural wonder I would love to visit.

You really like using borders don't ya? 

Actually, I use them to accommodate portrait-oriented pictures so they will fit on a 4:3, 72dpi computer screen and my digital picture frame. I usually crop the original, 3:2, 300dpi pictures produced by my Nikon camera by chopping off the least desirable portion. Given my druthers, I would probably not use "borders" at all.

I think we are going to Oregon in August this year. Maybe we should make a point to visit Multnomah Falls. It will be up to my son, the Tour Guide.

Thank you, ATKC, for both nice comments. We are now back home! Looking for a house. Staying with the single son. Hope he continues to tolerate me until we find that house.
