KC Gets Poor Marks From Developers

Developers give KC poor marks in survey

Area real estate developers think that doing business with Kansas City
is like pulling nails with a screwdriver, according to results of a
survey released Wednesday.

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Home Builders
Association of Greater Kansas City, in cooperation with City Manager
Wayne Cauthen, hired Integra Realty Resources to conduct a survey of
area developers to assess the state of the development process, the
chamber said in written release.

The survey assessed the Codes Administration and the Fire, Planning and
Development, Public Works and Water Services departments. Public Works
received the lowest customer satisfaction rating among the five city
departments, but the other four didn't fare much better.

Questions required general ratings of the development process in Kansas
City, and each resulted in less than satisfactory scores.

"The bottom line is that the development community believes that it is
an uphill battle to do development within the city of Kansas City," Tim
Underwood, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association,
said in the release.

Cauthen said he'll use the survey's results to help identify snags in
the development process.

"This information will assist me in developing a strategy to implement
change," Cauthen said in the release. "In the six months that I've been
in Kansas City, I have been to numerous business and neighborhood
meetings, and the development process has come up in about 95 percent of
those discussions."
