Interesting article re: cost to improve/fix the combined sewer issue that many of the nations older cities (including KC) face.
Love the bit about the River Des Pere tunnel under Forest Park.
There's a mention about KC's agreement with EPA as well, and the green infrastructure plan in the Marlborough neighborhood.
Oh, and this depressing quote about the Mississippi River, which could apply equally to KC's perception of the Missouri:
“We have a very fast-flowing, managed river that’s really constructed for commerce,” says Hoelscher, the sewer agency’s CEO. “We don’t have beaches. It’s not used for recreation.” In short, it’s a river that doesn’t need a lot of coddling.

this is insane!

there's a HUGE sailboating/boating community in the alton pool, which is the last lock on the mississippi right before the missouri river pours in. there are definitely SAND beaches on the mississippi river that people hang out on, and wade in the water (north of the missouri river/st. louis)...granted it's not for everyone and they can be really dangerous at times with under-tunneling by currents, but i've certainly done it, and know that people do it. the water is appreciably cleaner/clearer around alton/northern st. chas county before the missouri river and st. louis really messes up the mississippi.
