South Padre 2016 Part 3

Post by Roanoker »

If you have to be somewhere, it may as well be here.
Image

My husband’s friend doesn’t argue with him.
Image

I don’t think this pirate is a man.
Image

Ditto for this one.
Image

Had to investigate a bunch of flowers.
Image

Scooted the group on the right over to the left to make a better composition and to fit my 4:3 requirement.
Image

Flower focus.
Image

Here is one way to accommodate a portrait-oriented image.
Image

Flowers of a feather...
Image

I wonder if pirate games are anything like reindeer games.
Image

Flower pot taking a siesta.
Image

Fish sculpture, followed by strips of sky.

My husband always checks out places that may offer food.
Image

Store fronts are painted with style.
Image

Would you prefer pink or pink?
Image

Watch where you sit!
Image

Wonderful contrasts.
Image

A flower tree. I wonder if there are money trees.
Image

The ruffly flowers are intriguing.
Image

Aw. Baby flower. They all have to start somewhere.
Image

Now these are red. Notice the happy buds.
Image

Just a lot of interesting leaves.
Image

Sidewalk show-off.
Image

Shark graffiti.

It is now 2/2/16. The first thing we did is to tour South Padre Island by bus.

This must be a statue of the honored saint. I think this is the first day we realized it wasn’t going to be warm.
Image

Nice church.
Image

This shot reminds me of the book title, “Old Man and the Sea."
Image

Thin branches are beautiful.
Image

I had to throw this in to remember where we were.
Image

I did a little lens blur in patches of the background to boost a 3D effect.
Image

These flowers were growing right out of the white sand.
Image

These take on a 3D effect all on their own.
Image

There were two birds in the larger picture, but I chose to focus on just this one, brightening him up a bit to see his face better.
Image

You’d think this would be a parking lot for cars. But no. Birds are parked here. The important point here is the idea, not the picture.
Image

Here is another parking lot. For human snowbirds.
Image

What a clever way to scream, “This is an aquarium!"

While on the bus, I took some pictures from the window along the way. Here is one. The foreground trees are too close, so they blur.
Image

Whoever maintains this highway has a big job keeping the sand brushed away.
Image

This is just one of m-a-n-y pictures of sand encroaching onto the highway.
Image

I saw miles and miles of pretty much nothing. But apparently you can get a massage somewhere close by.
Image

Well now. This isn’t nothing.
Image

Neither is this. But not as formidable.
Image

This sand art was intriguing, so I took several shots.
Image

The sculptor doing his work.
Image

A work in progress?
Image

Close-up of the talented man.
Image

This picture is here mostly to remind me where we were.
Image

This display was on the inside of a building, so it was not subject to outdoor elements.

Several posts were carved into totems. Here is one.
Image

Here is another.
Image

I forgot was “Blackbeard’s” was, but we were there.
Image

We also visited what I call a “turtle hospital.”
Image

Fellow tourists attended a class of sorts, which explained what the facility accomplished. I walked around and took pictures.
Image

Pictures of the resident cat, for example.
Image

Another view of the “class.”
Image

Somebody had painted pictures of turtles on the floor. I circled the turtle pics, enhanced them with beveled edges and a drop shadow, and put them on a small, lightened portion of the floor, eliminating people’s feet (including mine), and achieving the 4:3 aspect ratio.
Image

“Sea Turtle, Inc.”
Image

Metal turtle, climbing the wall.
Image

Now for the shameless flowers. And wood.
Image

Closer.

Odd tree.
Image

I don’t know if these extensions are “flowers” or what.
Image

One of my favorite flowers, trying to hide from me.
Image

Birding and nature center. Don’t remember being in it.
Image

I guess this turtle was there.
Image

Picture wasn’t all that good. Had to do something.
Image

This was the most usable of the several pictures I took of this parrot and his woman.
Image

Used the picture on the sign to serve as the background for the picture of the sign. Who’s on first?
Image

More turtles. And giant four-leaf clovers. (Not really.)
Image

We don’t see ibis birds in Missouri.
Image

But we saw plenty of them on South Padre Island!
Image

Now I have seen coots like this one in the lake behind our house. The water here almost looks like chain link.

Well, the bird’s legs came out okay.
Image

We are visiting a bird sanctuary.
Image

The ibis stands out, but notice the other birds. I suppose they are paying homage in court.
Image

Blue herons are so pretty. We get to see them in Missouri, too.
Image

Another blue heron scrunches along the water’s edge.
Image

Man on bridge, heron underneath.
Image

They should have called this place “Heron Park.”
Image

However, this sign talks about gulls and terns. I’m sure there was a sign about herons, but who wants to see pictures of signs?
Image

More evidence that this is heron land. I like his squiggly reflection.
Image

We spotted some fish, too.
Image

Maybe the white bird is in the market for a good condo.
Image

I don’t know if these things are branches or roots, but they are intriguing.

We frequently see American Coots like this one in Missouri.
Image

We don’t see Ibis, like these two, in Missouri.
Image

Little Blue Herons like this one are also in Missouri.
Image

The various signs helped with identification.
Image

Thank goodness we don’t see any of these in Missouri.
Image

Not sure what this is. Maybe a crow.
Image

Great Blue Heron doing his thing. And I’m doing mine.
Image

Pretty turtle.
Image

I took a lot of pictures of this bird. I understand that it is a Common Gallinule. He didn’t learn how to apply lipstick properly.
Image

Here is another shot.
Image

You can see American Black Ducks like these in Missouri.
Image

I take pictures like this to remember where we were.
