Urban Chestnut brewery construction is under way in the Grove
stltoday.com
Urban Chestnut worked with Green Street, a Clayton-based developer, to find a building to renovate as a brewery. The beer maker says it has outgrown its brewhouse at 3229 Washington Avenue, which will remain open. That facility will produce 7,000 barrels this year, about double from a year ago.
The new brewery, located in the Grove entertainment area of the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, will have an annual capacity of about 15,000 barrels, with space to expand to 100,000 barrels.

Hotel, apartments and bank proposed for Forest Park Southeast
apartment infill rendering
Three sizable projects — a hotel, an apartment building and a bank — could be coming soon to the city’s Forest Park Southeast neighborhood.
Largest of the three is a four-story, $12.8 million hotel proposed for the 900 block of South Taylor Avenue, along Interstate 64. The site is just west of the Aventura apartments, in the 4400 block of Chouteau Avenue

small infill development, including it as an example of some of the inner suburban mixed use infill projects that are popping up along the central corridor. it also happens to be right across the street from where i live in maplewood.

Each home could include up to 500 square feet of commercial space. The city is limiting the commercial use to bike shops, small retail clothing boutique, florist, professional office, book store, bakery, art studio, gallery, or cafe.

Another small (but not so small) development, KDHX is moving into renovated building in Grand Center from South City. KDHX is "growing up." I sort of feel melancholy about this...

First Look: KDHX Moves to Larry J. Weir Center for Independent Media on December 15
On December 15, local community radio station KDHX officially makes its long-anticipated move from its Magnolia Avenue studios to the Larry J. Weir Center of Independent Music in Grand Center. The $3.25 million project features a cafe, listening room, brand new state-of-the-art studios and two floors of offices for staff and volunteers.
http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/rftmus ... a_kdhx.php
KDHX is moving in a block or so away from the spanking new KWMU (NPR) building already complete. KWMU was formerly located on the campus of UMSL.

which is right next door to KETC (PBS)...

Clayton residential new construction
A $350 million Clayton mixed-use project is expected to break ground in late spring 2014. The Crossing in Clayton transit oriented development project is adjacent to the Clayton Central Avenue MetroLink stop. It is bounded by Meramec Ave. on the west, Bonhomme Ave. on the north, Central Ave. on the east, and the 1280-space Shaw Park Municipal Garage to the south.

Apartments planned for vacant Alverne building
Restored public space, indoor parking and dozens of two-level apartments are planned for the vacant Alverne building in downtown St. Louis.
The Alverne was built in 1923 as the DeSoto Hotel. Later, it was operated for decades by the Archdiocese of St. Louis as housing for older adults. The housing closed in 1987, but a chapel remained open until 1991.
In what was originally a 235-room hotel, Hayden is planning 81 two-level apartments.

this is totally one of those key "big dusty buildings" between washington ave and downtown south that NEEDED to be developed to fix that no-mans land feel.

Big changes underway in downtown hotel market
New ownership of the Mayfair, Renaissance Grand and former Lennox hotels will shake up the downtown St. Louis market in 2014.
The epicenter of change will be on Washington Avenue, where the nearly 1,100-room Renaissance Grand hotel complex — the region’s largest — is situated. Two established hotel firms will take over the financially troubled complex and put it on a more sound footing.
Bigger change is coming to the venerable Mayfair, located a block south of Washington. The hotel changed hands last week and was immediately closed by the new owner to start a $15 million renovation. It will reopen next summer as a Magnolia, part of a small, Denver-based chain of boutique luxury hotels.

Critical Choices Ahead for St. Louis Transit
There are many public transit “maybes” in St. Louis right now. Its been eight years since the eight mile MetroLink Blue Line opened in 2006, but its not clear where the next substantial transit expansion will be built. Political leadership hasn’t established a top priority among a handful of proposals. Population density drives transit ridership as much as any other factor, but will the next expansion serve the most densely populated part of St. Louis? And Metro, stuck with long-term debt from the last MetroLink expansion and perpetually starved for state funding, operates in an extremely constrained capital expenditure environment.

They author of that piece, Alderman Scott Ogilvie is a strong pro-city and pro-urbanism voice as well as a great follow on Twitter. I'd love to have someone like him on the council here in KC.
