I wonder if it's Mike and Marian Ilitch, owners of Little Caesar's Pizza and the Detroit Red Wings hockey team?
Don't think so. The article, published in July, stated the land was already purchased for those projects. Of course there may be another plan in the works.

They could be buying additional, adjacent land for future development. If the parcels sold at auction are near their current developments, they might want to control any land bordering their neighborhoods. If not to build on just yet, but to be able to keep out anything that might adversely affect their real estate holdings (plasma centers, payday loans, dollar stores, storefront churches, used car lots, Habitat for Humanity houses, etc.).

Tearing down 200-300 houses a week and not replacing that housing stock will create a lot of green space. Be interesting to see how the city will utilize that space that over the years.

They'll probably use it as well as they use their current stock of vacant land.

Can we get people to move back to Detroit?
Density is directly correlated with carbon emissions. Denser cities have lower emissions from transportation because residents drive less and drive shorter distances. And cities in general have lower emissions than suburbs for the same reasons. It’s economically and ecologically wasteful to build out new roads and sewers to serve new homes in new suburbs when you could instead move people back into legacy cities, and lower their carbon footprints in the process.

So it would be good for the environment if people could be cajoled into moving to places like Detroit — but can they?
