I was watching the Food channel and they were in Boston's North end and it was truly a nice looking place. Just imagine that within walking distance of each other there were at least five italian restaurants. The streets were so alive with people it was unbelievable. Ive never actually been there, but its now on my list of places to see once Im out of school.

Wow bahua, nice pics, you can definately see that Kansas City is a midwestern city looking at those pictures. The very last pic was a pedestrian only street? And there were businesses on it? Wow, I dont think there is a single street like that here in KC.

Edited the post to give credit where due. Sorry bahua, i looked at the wrong post name

Those were my pics, chief!

Yeah, that was a ped street, but the ped-only streets in Boston are generally in touristic areas, like Faneuil Hall, Harvard, and Government Center. They are still very nice, though.

As a matter of fact:

It does cooler things if you looks at it with a non-IE web browser.

Resurrecting this thread.

I'm headed to Boston this weekend and in search of some recommendations. Food, drink, etc. All suggestions welcome!

Are there such things as seafood dive bars? If so, I'd like to visit one.

The Paramount in Beacon Hill for breakfast. If you make it out to Brookline, The Publick House for beer!

Here's a guide from a friend that has been a hit with others. Have fun!

First stop for a beer. Go to Union Oyster House, oldest continuously
running restaurant in US - (near Fanuel Hall). Saddle up to the
semi-circular bar and order a 'Sammie' (Samuel Adams) or a Guinness.
Anything else is frowned upon. Order a cup of clam chowder, pronounced
Chowdah. A simple chowder, original old school simple. Watch people
out the window. Chill.

Then walk to Regina's Pizza in the North End, around 4-5 reasonable
blocks. After 5pm and a line starts to form. At lunch a line forms. It
moves fairly quick and totally worth the wait. They age their dough
for 3 days before making a pie, makes for the best crust in the US in
my opinion. Regina's is only 150 feet from where mafia crime boss,
Gerry Angiulo, had his headquarters. Old school. Old world. The North
End is THE best Italian section in the US - hands down. Old world,
winding cobblestone side streets, old Italians here or there on the
stoops sitting out and watching things.

Order like a local - a large cheese, extra chees and extra oil (olive
oil). Do NOT put veggies on it. And do NOT plan on sharing the large.
It's big, but you'll want every bit of it. They do simple well. This
is NOT fancy pizza. It's the mint kay bass of pizza. Drink a coke with
it. Don't fuck this up. Coke over beer with pizza. Waitresses may seem
pushy by design, but they're actually very cool.

Before leaving ask the waitress the directions to Mike's Pastry. When
someone overhears you ask and tells you that Modern Pastry across the
street is better. Nod your head and ignore them. They are wrong. Don't
fuck this up either. There are those who like Mike's and those like
Modern because Mike's is so much more successful. Don't let Mike's
success fool you. It fucking rocks the house in spite of their fame.

Mike's is only a 2 minute walk down cobblestone side streets, past one
of the best smelling bakeries you'll ever smell in your life. Past the
little Catholic School playground, and you are just about there at the
next little intersection on Hanover St. Turn right, 3 or 4 doors down.

Gently nudge your way to the counter at Mike's - it's busy. Order at
least 3 chocolate dipped canoli's. Eat one there, and take two back to
the hostel! On your way out the door to the left, get a cup of the
lemon ice, with little bits of fresh lemon zest in it. It rocks. Don't
fuck this up. When you are standing in front of Mikes facing the
opposite side of the street, on the next street parallel to where you
are standing is Paul Revere's house - only 150 feet away. Check it
out, or walk to the left up Hanover St. for the Old North church, the
statue of Paul Revere, etc. But remember that you are there to EAT.

Get on the subway to head towards Fenway, but get off at Symphony Hall
and check out Upton's Bass. You are in the Back Bay. Play some great
basses, walk up Newbury St. GREAT street to stroll up and down and
shop. If one only had a ton of money. Walk down to Fenway Park, also
in Back Bay around 6 blocks. (By subway, it's Kenmore Sq). Fenway is
SO SMALL and cool as HELL. Manual scoreboard, we Bostonians love that
old school shit.

Best chance to catch rockabilly is probably either in the
Brighton/Allston area near Boston University - BU. Around a mile from
Fenway on the same subway line. Or there are also acts that come
through in Cambridge, either near Harvard Sq or Central Sq. Big Sandy
sometimes plays in Harvard Sq. A different subway line, but easy to
get too, across on the Charles River. The subways in Boston are safe,
fun and old school cool.

Have a great time. Eat lobster and steamed clams (Steamahs) if you
can. Mostly importantly, no veggies on the pizza, do not share, say no
to Modern Pastry. Try not to fuck this up and have a wicked good
time."

neptune oyster is great! easier to get in with just a couple people at the bar, not the best place for a big group or with kids...it's tiny.

don't forget bukowski's.

I was in Boston over the weekend and I find it a very underwhelming city, kind of overrated. Not sure how others feel about it but trying to Navigate around that city is a nightmare. The city in general is very expensive, I feel like you get better value in Philly and Baltimore while Boston is pretty much a similar city. The people drive and act like assholes (Massholes). City is very sleepy. Restaurants all close pretty early and bars close at like 130am, this pizza by the slice place on Saturday was closed at like 900pm and it was next to like 3 bars, why would you close that early? The skyline is also pretty boring. The mass transit stops at like midnight and is not the best. I just don't get why its so expensive compared to Philly and Baltimore. I really enjoy Philly and think its kind of underrated.

Boston has fantastic history like Philly though agree, much prefer Philly. Like Boston/Cambridge city infrastructure, the people not so much. Do the lobsta/local seafood, otherwise food pretty bland, often overcooked, the spiciest they can handle is black pepper. Also agree Philly (especially Center City) is underrated, love their park squares/circles. Over 6M people yet they live in shadow of NYC and rather unnecessarily self-deprecating, good restaurant/bar scene though.

What I love about E Coast is ability to take a train up/down coast for day trips and never need a car, but on work visits, work environment seemed consistently dog-eat-dog world to me for entire coast, no support for each other and dragging others down to get ahead - not likely an oversimplification. DC best foodie town on E Coast methinks. Love to visit E Coast but could never make the jump to move despite opportunities, though work out of Brooklyn each year when I get a chance. Brooklyn is my home away from home.

I get the chance to interact with a lot of east coasters.
Both those still living there and those who have relocated to KC.
Each group offers routinely the observation that the ultra-competitive culture is a big reason to leave the east coast.
They add to it the long commutes/mind-numbing traffic and high costs of everything.
