Was Quindaro ever prosperous? Maybe...
This is a screen shot of part of a page from the 1954 Polk's City Directory. It's just a few blocks of Quindaro that shows it used to have something going for it. A wide variety of businesses and professional people. I especially like "Dorothea's Personality School" I can scan other KCK locations if anyone is curious about what once was.

Don't mean to hijack but I just remembered, when I drove down there yesterday I went by some sort of very large mansion with a plaque or designation of sorts. I slowed and and a group of thuggish characters yelled something at me from a corner across the street so I kept moving. Anyone know what I'm talking about? What was that place?

Think it's called Parkwood, an almost Westheight quality neihborhood.
Quindaro was very prosperous and upscale, in the 1920's and 1930's.

That's no highjack- you're right on topic. See if you can find the house on Google Streetview and post the link and I'll scan the directory page.

I can't for the life of me find it. I thought I was on Quindaro because I eventually ended up in Fairfax, I might have to drive it again. It was yellow if I remember and had a retaining wall next to the street. The house sat high off the street.DeadendLafayette wrote: PS:

I am not sure if one would call it prosperous or not but Quindaro was respectable into the 60's. My family moved from the 10th and Quindaro area in 1957 but still has cousins living nearby into the 60's.
I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

Don't know. I didn't ask him when I come on the scene.
I will try to remember the next time.

Narrow it down to a street or intersection and I'll scan it in. In the directory, Metropolitan only goes to s44th, and s34th only goes to Merriam Lane to give you an idea of the limits of the book.

AKP, I asked because whatever hospital my brothers and sisters were born at in KCK had closed by the time I was born in 1952aknowledgeableperson wrote: Don't know. I didn't ask him when I come on the scene.

and our Doctor, Dr. Earnest,(who practiced with his brother Dr. Gaylord, had moved his hospital privileges to St. Mary's, thus I am Missouri born (sorry 18th Street ) My buddy Rick Odell, now of Phoenix Az., http://rickodellphoto.com/ was delivered by the same doctor on the same day at the same hospital. Thought maybe you were our long lost triplet

DL, the main business streets of Argentine were Metropolitan from about 7th street to 22nd or so, Silver for 18th Street to 22nd(?) and Strong from 22nd to 34th, with Strong being the main business street still existing today. Silver was taken out for urban renewal ,DeadendLafayette wrote: Bbqboy,

and KC Structural Steel, (formerly the silver smelter long ago) which built many of the buildings and bridges etc. in KC and elsewhere
is now gone and leveled also.

I was born in 1951 with my parents long dead so I have no idea of the doctor.bbqboy wrote: AKP, I asked because whatever hospital my brothers and sisters were born at in KCK had closed by the time I was born in 1952

On the other hand my wife was born in KCK but the family lived by 55th and the Paseo.

Parkwood was a very early JC Nichols development! KCK had a lot going for it and a large professional class prior to WWII.
Re: Was Quindaro ever prosperous? Maybe...
J.C. Nichols had nothing to do with Parkwood. It was designed by Sid Hare, who designed many Nichols subdivisions, as well as nearby Westheight Manor.moderne wrote: Parkwood was a very early JC Nichols development! KCK had a lot going for it and a large professional class prior to WWII.
