The buldings south of Washington Square Park are now gone and replaced by the Westin Crown Center Hotel. The Plaza and Ryan hotels used to stand on the sight then known as Signboard Hill across from Union Station.

An aerial of Union Station shows the massive train sheds that surrounded it in 1930.
It was the largest train shed cover between Lawrence, Kansas, and Oak Grove, Missouri. :P

Re: Postcards From the Edge of Time
Ah, yes, Allen's Drive-In. I believe it was the closest drive-in frequented by my friends who went to Southeast High School in the late 50s and early 60s. I went to Paseo High School. (Let's not discuss what happened to that beautiful, old building.) The closest drive-in was The Y, which later became Max's. You could get a Big Max for 50 cents. That was long before the Big Mac. Teenagers really did drive through those places just as depicted in the movie, American Graffiti. Do any pictures exist of those eateries? I don't know what is there now. I'm 1000 miles away.
Thanks for posting all these wonderful pictures. Oh, yes. Peck's. I bought a winter coat there when I was 16. If you wanted to go shopping, you went downtown.
