I use to walk by the Can Can as a kid and try to peek in the door. Never did get a look see, so I just went across the street and played in the fountain
Ah, thank you Fang for another trip down memory lane.
At age 18 I spent a Christmas eve on this block with a friend. We spent $20 on drinks and had many bought for us. Scotch and water was fifty cents in most of the places. So, that bought a lot of scotch and a bit of my education.
Lesson learned: You want to avoid scotch coming out your nose under pressure. 'Nuf said.
Photo of the front facade of the former Kimo Theater located at 3319 Main Street near Linwood. The site today is the Midtown Marketplace (Home Depot). The theater was completed in 1913 and was designed by Robert Boller of the Boller Brother architecture firm, which designed many Kansas City area theaters. The photo shown would have been the theater after the 1943 remodel--also by Robert Boller. Later in its' life, it was known as the Dove Theater. The Alamo Theater building, across the street and down the block, still remains as a retail complex.

Fang, that shot is amazing. You found something that hit very close to home. My parents lived there right after WW2. My dad still calls it "Hungry Hill" as opposed to "Hospital Hill". My mom still gets pissed when he does too. Here are some shots from my families personal collection. These are my older sisters.
There was also temporary barracks housing built in Penn Valley Park during WWII. I'll try and find the aerial photo that shows it. I think it might have been for the military personnel training in KC during the war. It was just south of the Old Post Office building, and west of the Liberty Memorial grounds, on that hill where the softball fields are now. There was also some barracks constructed west of Trinity Lutheran/St. Mary's where the dog park is now.
Here is an aerial of the area surrounding Penn Valley Park. Note the left side I've made a square around a rather large building on 31st St. in a treed area. Does anyone know what that building was? It's north of where Penn Valley Community College is now. It would be where One Park Place and the firefighters fountain are today.
I've also made a square on the right side of a large building south of the Ice warehouse on 31st between Broadway and Main. Does anyone know what that was?

Here's an impressive collection I stumbled upon. 31 old pictures and postcards of Kansas City parks and boulevards. Unfortunately it doesn't shed any light on that mystery building in Penn Valley but still very interesting.
