Record Bar on Westport Road

Post by trailerkid »

Any word on this place? The Pitch had its lips firmly attached to its behind in the current issue. It's owned by one of the guys from Shiner.

Below is some info from the weekly Sad Dog email regarding the new Record Bar. It sounds as if they are going to be doing a lot of live music. Should be a good deal. I liked Malloy's OK, but it didn't have a great atmoshphere. It was definitely a step in the right direction from Finnegans - but it lacked a consistant music theme. I saw a great Scotish band called Aberfeldy there - but the old-guard Irish folks wouldn't shut up and listen (no offense intended) until they were admonsihed by the 20 yr old lead singer.

From Sad Dog:
As you might have noticed, this week in Sad Dog has mentioned the Record Bar quite a few times. Well hell yeah it is!!! Congratulations to my old friends Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill on the Grand Opening of this new joint. Formally Malloy Bros. (Southwest Trafficway and Westport Road), the bar is taking a slow turn away from its Irish predecessor. The cuisine is shifting from traditional Irish fare and leaning towards Italy with paninis and pizzas. The walls are beginning to hold 45’s, Classic Record Covers, and being musicians themselves, posters from former bands such as Season to Risk and Shiner. In fact, the owners will take the stage in their newest band, Roman Numerals, on Monday night for the Cowtown for Crawdads Benefit.

i believe the life & times is playing there on saturday, one of my favorite kc bands. (ex-shiner) dont try to be a bad-ass and not wear earplugs if you plan on being anywhere near the stage. i know i thought my ears were going to bleed when i saw them at the brick a while back.

Just a note - on Tuesdays from 7:30-10:00, Rex Hobart and his Honkey Tonk Standard Band (I think that's what he said they were - not the Misery Boys) play the Record Bar and there is no cover. They sounded great and it was a really good crowd. I'd highly recommend it. I believe, for now, it's a weekly gig.

Gotta love free music...

I know that their pizza is really good, but I have always left before any music started so I don't know what that's like.    (I like to go to bars to talk to my friends, not to shout "WHAT?" back and forth across the table at them. :) )

Rex plays there every Tuesday 7:30-10p - no cover.

The atmosphere is nice - good place to see music. Small dance floor - short tables/booths in front - tall tables and bar in the back. Just like Malloy Bros., but they cleared it out and did the seating better.

I really like the menu. They have a nice list of meats, vegetables and cheeses and you can make a sandwich, pasta, pizza or antipasta plate. Still serve Malloy Bros. Reubens and fish/chips.

I've seen a few other bands there. After Rex on Tuesdays they have a DJ. It's been different every time. Some good. Some not-so-good.

Right on. Rex and the boys played my wedding a few years back.  He's a great guy.  Didn't know he was back in KC.  Being able to see Rex (i assume solo acoustic) for no cover every week is pretty sweet.

Record Bar has quickly establishes itself as a premier venue in KC for touring  indie acts (black dice, archer prewitt, etc.)  awesome.  i also read somewhere (the pitch?) that the owners invested a lot in the sound system so as to make the venue more about the music.

That would be because one of the owners is Steve Tulipana, of Season to Risk and Pornhuskers fame.

Personally, I think they've done a great job with it. Good music, good food, and some decent beer on tap (although nothing spectacular).

Actually, he's had a band every week I've gone with the exception of Valentine's Day. We walked in and he was going from table-to-table with his guitar. It was some special deal - they had white tablecloths and candles out. I didn't stay long that night.

The band seems to be a rotating group of guys. Usually a good-sized band with a pedal guitar player.

Absolutely worth checking out.

Ha!  I opened up this thread because I thought it was referring to the old chain of music stores that used to be popular in malls around KC back in the 80's called Record Bar.  I was like "Hmm.  I thought those were extinct."

Went last night for the first time to check out the Pony's (Chicago band).  Great venue to see live music!  I don't chase local bands down all that much, but I was really impressed with the Roman Numerals.  I only caught the last song the Belles played, and American Catastrophe was decent - they have some talent, just not my kinda music.  The Pony's (minus their technical difficulties) & Roman Numerals were well worth the $10 bucks to get in.  I wish I went Friday night to see the other local stuff.
