But don't write it off as a destination dining spot yet. Wes Gartner says it will reopen as a restaurant in several months. The new venue will not be called the R Bar, he says. "But we're not ready to release the new name yet," Gartner adds.
New life for R Bar. Catering company will turn it into resto soon.

Is disappointing this spot doesn't work as a bar as it's such a great classic lounge/bar space, but it is such an isolated location with very few people who live in that area to support it. I hope it can return as a bar/restaurant someday. Genesee Royale nearby seems to manage well though and draws many from downtown/midtown for Saturday bfast, myself included.

I think rbar blew it when they dropped lunch. Do like the Reiger and have some working class fare during the day and a bit more upscale in the evening.

Allright! Wes and Jill are such amazing people!

Really excited to jump off the highdive into anything they do, and this location coming back to real life makes my nether regions tingle.

i have been once, but enjoyed it. it basically looks 99% like R Bar, sans the huge "R" and the "country and western" sort of design flourishes. the food is good, the drinks are good, the vibe is good (i like the turntable, always a nice touch). like R Bar, they are going to have a tough time convincing people to go out of their way down to the Bottoms, esp. with the 12th street bridge closure. i'm sure the Bottoms is on the cusp of "being something," but ultimately it's out-of-sight, out-of-mind for most kansas citians and something needs to be a pretty unique draw to survive down there. the aggregation of antique stores is a great draw. amigoni is unique and has a great space. Gen Royale seems to be making a go of it, but KC folks seem more than willing to drive a ways for brunch, time will tell whether they will go down for weeknight dinners or drinks. i certainly hope they do well.

My food has been excellent each time I've been there. The 12th street viaduct closing is unfortunate. They also have a great bar with a solid selection of whiskey.

Is the viaduct closed, or just the highway access from the bridge?

The lower level is open. But unless they have re-opened the southbound ramp to 12th Street from I-35 in the past couple of days for right turns only, the upper level is effectively closed since it's cut off at the east end.
