Food trucks in Kansas City.

there may as well be a dedicated thread discussing KC's embrace of this ubiquitous food trend.

obviously there have been food trucks in KC for a while - indep ave and SW Blvd taco trucks, jerusalem cafe truck, catfish trucks, etc., but now KC has a burgeoning community of more hipster-type food trucks, some with impressive culinary pedigrees.

we have not made it to port fonda yet, but are really dying to.  what other trucks are good?  fresher than fresh sno-cones is obviously a perennial favorite.  i have not tried (or even seen) The Good You, Magical Meatball Tour, etc.

I've done Port Fonda (4-stars) and Magical Meatball Tour (3-stars). I wanted to like MMT more, but while the beef+pork meatball I had was good, the veggie "meatball" was embarrassing. That's the extent of the "hipster-type" food trucks I've visited.

i would also like to open the discussion to the more traditional, taco truck type operations around town - but, to be honest, i don't think i know the name of a single one of them that i have tried!  "uhh...i like that one at, like, indep. ave and benton?"

I've been to Port Fonda once, and it was awesome.

MG's Old Fashion Burgers (you have to see the stenciling on the van to appreciate just how low rent it is) serves greasy steak burgers ala Winstead's, with similar onion rings (but greasier).  This meal will instantly satisfy, and feel like you were punched in the stomach the next morning.  I would do it again, though, if given the right amount of beer.

I recently ate at a taco truck outside of the Mattie Rhoad's Art Center in the Westside.  I only ordered one street taco (pastor), and it was delicious and cheap.  Unfortunately, I can't remember the name.

On my list to check out still are the Good You and a few others.  Also: http://www.westportfoodtruckfest.com

Yeah, that's the problem. They usually have names, often something like "Taqueria " or whatever, but I can never remember which is which. There's one guy I've noticed lately with what appears to be a big, flaming grill and a small cart who is up and down the sidewalk along the Avenue in the evening. I haven't stopped in to see what his deal is yet, but it looks interesting, at least. He appears to be quite mobile, moving up and down the street all night.

I saw via twitter that someone was looking to create a food truck centralized parking area in the Crossroads.

It is great to have a good variety and quantity of food trucks coming up in KC.  One other thing I would like to see us copy is pretty popular in Chicago.  A woman with a big cooler of tomales with hot sauce walks around to many of the bars and sells tomales for like $1 or $2 a piece.  I think some of the bars with late night snacks don't like her to come in, but for many, it has just become a part of the evening atmosphere.  It's like an adult ice cream man with everyone pointing her out when she walks inside a bar.

There is actually a woman like this who walks door to door in the Westside every now and again.  Now, if I brush up on my Spanish, perhaps I can convince her to sell them in Westport some weekend... or perhaps a Port Fonda branded cooler could make its way around to get the word out?  $2 tomale and a flyer?

yeah i was going to say, i have seen at least one Tamale Lady walking around with a cooler.  also, one time at the Hideout bar on Central in KCK, a guy was going door to door selling (raw) STEAKS.  i think bahua was tempted to get one.

if a door to door tamale or steak Guy did this in overland park, the cops would be called within 5 minutes and you would hear 5 news reports about it.

For selling food or for being a suspicious-looking foreigner?

Nice!
Anyone else see the grilled cheese chain that is starting out in California funded by Tech VCs and founded by the former founder of Flip Camera? http://on.wsj.com/jMaKkg There will be a huge focus on technology for the restaurant. Pretty cool stuff.
