favorite under-the-radar mexican places in the kansas city area?

Post by chrizow »

mexican food is awesome.

less awesome is that i am (deliciously) stuck going to the same places on southwest boulevard or, recently, mi ranchito in overland park (very good hot salsa and shrimp tacos - bonus points for generous use of cilantro).

what other mexican places are really good?  bonus points for more "authentic" establishments and/or places with good fish/shrimp dishes.

gracias.

i hate most mexican restaurants, but i like teocali because it's never crowded, the seafood dishes are good, and i don't smell like a food worker when i leave (ventilation?).

Try El Pueblito at SW/Summit if you like Shrimp - they have an extensive coastal-style seafood selection.

You need to go to KCK.  There are several great places along Kansas Avenue on either side of 7th Street, especially Ninfa's and El Taconazo.  Also Las Gordita's on Central Avenue a few blocks west of 7th.  If you don't mind standing out as gringo, you will get awesome food at these places.

El Camino Real. Excellence.

Two locations, one downtown KCK and the other on Argentine in Armourdale.

I second the Ninfa's, but they aren't open for dinner, so don't make that mistake.  That place is pretty cheap and the tortilla's with butter/hot salsa are out of this world.

I also enjoy the Cancun Fiesta Fresh for late night eats in Westport (not so under the radar) and the aforementioned Mi Ranchito.

If you are ever in Lawrence, try out Tortas Jalisco.  They used to be in a gas station on 6th and Kasold, but now have their own place nearby.  It's pretty authentic and delicious.

La Pablionita (sic) just north on Main on 7th in Grandview. Most authentic place I've been in KC.

Toreros in Lee's Summit, north of 50 on 291N. Fairly authentic one of my favorites.

I second El Pueblito.  Very good, authenitic food that is well priced.  I have had the carne asada and the mole, both were just like I was in middle mexico.

I like ortega's at 2646 Belleview Ave, between Penn Valley park and Southwest Blvd.

The place on 7th Street in KCK, just north of City Hall is also good.

And don't forget Pancho's at 34th and Main!

We tried Ninfa's for lunch today.  Excellent food.  I could eat the tortillas and hot sauce and be perfectly happy with just that.  I had the fried corn taco plate and my husband had a tamale and a corn taco.  Excellent food.  We picked up a dozen tamales (the last dozen pork) to go as well as 16 oz of the hot sauce.

I've suggested to my husband that we try El Taco Nazo next, but he's now firmly stuck on Ninfa's.  Great food and great prices.

Third for Camino Real, and specifically for their tacos al pastor.  Terrific.

Taqueria y Marisqueria Silva on the Blvd probably has my favorite tacos overall to date.

Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio doesn't quite match on the fillings, but their tortillas hot off the press are wonderful.

I've only been to El Pueblito once but was pretty satisfied.

Went to Taconazo once too, and for whatever reason, the meal wasn't particularly memorable, but that's not to really knock on the place.

My newly discovered favorite in KC is Los Tules at 1656 Broadway.  Try the ultimate quesadilla -- it is da bomb!
