Given the numbers in the article the ticket sales must refer to non-professional sport events.

A friend of mine wrote this lovely erudite biography of Justin Timberlake, so just to get you all ready for the big day:

Yikes, only 4,500 people showed up to the Kanye show. I don't know if that looks bad on him or us.

Gawker: Kanye West reportedly filled fewer than 4,500 seats in Kansas city

The Star's second paragraph was a great example of a writer trying to backfit a story into their narrative:
West almost certainly could have filled the Sprint Center five years ago. Tuesday's poor attendance indicates how his scandalous love life, frequent impolite pronouncements and his gradual shift away from conventional hip-hop have alienated many of his fans.
That statement is almost certainly more correct without the first two "reasons". Celebrity and popular music have always thrived on people doing the first two things.

Bob Boyland (sic) from NPR's: All Songs Considered hated the new Kayne West album, to the point that he was actually mad about what West did with "Blood on the Leaves". Never heard a reaction like that from him in ten years. The rest of the group basically said it was weird because they "liked everything about it except that Kanye was on it. It's kind of like the people who hate Woody Allen, 'I love Woody Allen movies except for that nervous little Jewish guy that's in all of them'".

He is certainly polarizing and will be looked back as someone that push beyond genre, and as a true innovator. But those types are rarely loved or fill 20,000 seat arenas. I don't enjoy his work at all.

I love Bob Boyland, but he and the folks at All Songs have admittedly not been very good at reviewing hip hop. Here is a pretty interesting review of the album from Lou Reed. Yes, that Lou Reed:

I got to go to the concert for free, and if you can say nothing else about it (I agree that rap concerts in arenas in general are a bad idea), the production was incredibly ambitious, and the concept was just a touch from being pretty amazing. The guy works hard for the money.

Not trying to stick up for Kanye, but I think people are overreacting to the attendance numbers from his Tuesday show because of the lightning rod he is. I'd also have to see how expensive the average Drake ticket was vs. Kanye's.

Even though it was a Sunday, the Drake concert in Minneapolis only drew about 7000 fans with an empty upper deck.

So related to Sprint Center, of which tours are booked by AEG as is Midland Theatre, a 3rd smaller AEG venue is coming to E Xroads, being developed from some Nashville guys. Will be be an open floor venue handling about 1000-1500 people. Expected to book about 80 shows a year.

It sounds like the operators have control of selecting shows that AEG can get touring through Midwest.

Brooks is set to make the announcement in a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Kauffman Stadium.

A press release says that “stars from across the world of sports will also be in attendance.”
