Agreed....downtown needs more fast food that doesn't close at 3pm.....and yes more chains...not like we don't have enough ground level retail sitting empty

Chains are fine to a degree but having traveled around US constantly many times over and essentially living in other markets every winter, KC metro (especially suburban KC) is oddly way into generic chains moreso than other markets. What's with the obsession with pre-fabbed manufactured foods here? I'm hardly a locatarian purist though, spend too much $ at Costco and Trader Joe's.

Seems like a reasonably sized space for a Panera if you add in the corner spot vacated by Plowboys.

I still pine for a Longboards downtown.

+1 for a Longboards.

Maybe they'd be able to a get a deal for the former Zaina space, as it's pretty clear that Pickleman's is doing its best Godot impression currently.

I tweeted at Pickelman's this morning. They say a sign will go up soon and work on the interior will restart ASAP.

We shall see.

Is that a pickle in your pocket or are you just happy to post on the rag?

I don't mean to get off topic, but Barrel 31 closed - and now it's something else already.

That is all. Back to the pickle talk.

Martini Corner could use some ethnic eats like Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, E Mediterranean or something. From what I understand over half of people moving to Union Hill/Gilham area and Armour stretch are from larger markets, more accustomed to ethnic range of eats. And a lot of IT types from India as well. Martini Corner could easily become another W39th with its wide range of ethnic eats, instead of maybe too much focus on upscaled Midwestern. I miss the old Velvet Dog BTW, it got maybe too stanky last few years but was a great arty dive leaning bar that should've stayed that way instead of the sterilized 'theme-like' refresh.

Per this thread, second highest import into KC area is from India and Midtown is clearly one of the areas, especially Gilham and Armour stretches...

I too miss the old Velvet Dog and you described it perfectly. Loved the loungey vibe upstairs, the mismatched lamps behind the bar. Late stage Velvet Dog and especially the Barrel 31 days...lost the plot.

On a similar note miss the Lava Room for similar reasons. Good times.

"martini corner" is in serious need of some freshening up. it is strange to me that area has become this frozen-in-2001 timewarp that has become so stagnant and even declined in recent years, given all the new residential that has been constructed nearby as well as the continued gentrification of NHP, longfellow, Center City, beacon hill, etc.
