I think that spelling as actually a good deal more lame than you said. I think it was "Slam*rz."

Does anyone remember the Rhumba Box?  Specifically, the address... I used to hang out there back in the day but never drove...I just remember it being very cold in the winter, they had to use space heaters... they had the best pop tarts and garage bands
Beck performed there right as Loser started getting airplay on MTV.  Crazy place.

Two places that are gone that I really loved were also in the very same location (39th near State Line) at different times: Food for Thought and Tribal Grill.  I especially adored the latter place when Sara & Doc Holliday had it.  Sara was/is such an amazing talent in the kitchen and Doc was/is such a character at the front of the house...I hope they eventually open a new place one of these days.  I miss 'em!

Oops...and I have to go along w/ the other board members who set a laurel on the grave of Rumba Box- it was a truly wonderful, unique place.  I expect that KC will never see another place like it again, at least not for a looong time.

In about 30 minutes you can add Judge's in the Commerce Arcade to the list -- they are serving their last breaklfast right now and will not be serving lunch today.    (This is the place where you can get Lamaar's donuts in the morning.)

They did not tell any of their customers they were closing, I found out only because one of my co-workers overheard two employees talking and so asked the cashier.

This makes no sense to me at all as that place is ALWAYS busy.

Their departure will leave a little more than half of the retail spaces in the Commerce Arcade empty.   Which makes me wonder what on earth Tower Properties is doing... are they trying to empty out the spaces on purpose for some reason or do they just not care?

Tried it yesterday, Koop is the owner's last name it's called something like Grandmaster bbq with 10 other words thrown in. Their sauce taste liked curry catsup, I used to get in Germany. Meats are cooked the classical way not very soulful as for bbq joints go. I used to see the guy's truck out on 350 and Noland for the longest and out in Sugar Creek also. I'm not a big bbq freak so others might like it. It tasted like hotel bbq to me.

I think we must've run in the same- or at least related -circles; I fondly remember both venues, and actually promoted a few of the VFW shows!  :D

quite possible - although those were my high school years and i only spent a handful of times at either place - i was 16 and didn't really know what the hell was going on, and on the fringe of the "scene" so to speak.
i think i saw red savash? or red something...  at 454.  and maybe the breakups.
and the queers at VFW.  i think.  i have fond memories of both - although i probably only went a handful of times.

The building is about 20 years old now, so it's time to let it get run down so TIF money will be available to spruce it back up.  This is disappointing news.

Alas, Stephensons Apple Farm may soon be joining this list (if it hasn't already).

I now work just down the road from Stepheson's Apple Farm.  I'll have to drive up the road to see if it is still open.

I think the Loehman's (91/Metcalf) location is still alive and kicking. I've eaten there within the past two years. Seville is obviously gone - not sure about the one that used to be somewhere around 87th/I-35. If there was ever one there.
If it doesn't have street-level retail, it's an abortion.

87th and Marshall in Lenexa - its still there.  Interestingly the two are completely unrelated - the guy who owned them all originally sold them to different parties so the menues are different, etc.  The Seville Sq location has been gone for eons.
