ALL Sears stores are depressing. Hence, them going away. You would think they could have been competitive in Overland Park. There were rumors ten years ago about them building a store (and relocating?) in Corbin Park as I recall. But for whatever reason they didn't really try very hard in OP; that store looked like it had last been updated in 20 years ago.

It's funny that you say that considering that the Topeka Sears is in much better physical condition than Metcalf South and Antioch Were and is definitely a better looking store than the sloppy mess they're operating over at Independence Center...

How many times am I going to have to tell you that Sears does not own or operate the Sears Hometown/Outlet stores? They spun the division into a separate company that licenses the Sears name and ability to sell Kenmore products years ago. These stores have their own ads and prices and do not honor any promotions ran by the separate full line department store company because they're not the same company anymore.

I never heard that. Sears was always listed as an anchor tenant of the failed faux downtown that MD wanted to build on the mall site before the recession.

The Metcalf South Sears was updated in the early 2000's, received new carpet and a few areas were repainted in the early 2010's, and the Lands' End department was redone just a few years ago. Antioch was only slightly updated in the late 90's when it expanded and IC was updated once around that same time. They did some very minor work when part of the store became Dick's, but the work was sloppy.

Which is a subsidy of Sears Hometown which isn't run by Sears and hasn't been owned by them since 2012... The only small format store Sears owns and runs is in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Why would they keep the name? Trying to lure the 50 and over crowd? You would think they would change the name if they wanted actual business

So all of the ones barely getting by in small towns don't have to update their signs from the 90s.

They're hoping to capitalize on the heavily tarnished Sears name. Sears was actually helping Hometown franchisees set up stores in markets that they were vacating for some time, and some dying malls even received a new Hometown store after the big one closed. Most of these Hometown stores have since closed.
