The east side of KCMO is starting to look like the Ghost of Christmas Future for parts of northern JoCo. Of course, if you built your city on rock n roll on a development model that constantly craves new blood, you can't be too shocked.

I can't think of anywhere right off where this is the case. Newer, modern retail developments have been build on the border and adjoining areas of far northern OP though, in Mission and Merriam. The east side of 95th and Metcalf, of course, needs some help, which hopefully the developer who recently bought that land will come up with something good.

Eastern Shawnee, on the other hand, you could make a more valid jab at considering all of the empty retail space along Quivira between SM PKWY and 75th St. However, there's a start at progress there, with the renovation of 10 Quivira Plaza and SM PKWY and Quivira and ongoing improvement to Shawnee Parkway Plaza and SM PKWY and Pflumm.

I'd disagree about Mission and Merriam. Ikea not withstanding, they haven't been able to keep the Home Depot complex full. Downtown Merriam has plenty of empty storefronts. The Johnson Drive stretch of Mission is barely hanging on, most of the activity has been current tenants moving around to take advantage of excess empty storefronts.

It would have been a miracle to keep the Johnson Drive storefronts full with the ongoing flood-control construction that's been going on for what feels like a decade. I think they've done a fantastic job considering how many businesses have had to put up "HONEST! We're still in business!" signs.

It would have been a miracle to keep the Johnson Drive storefronts full with the ongoing flood-control construction that's been going on for what feels like a decade. I think they've done a fantastic job considering how many businesses have had to put up "HONEST! We're still in business!" signs.

I think the problems started long before the street construction, though they are certainly missing the post-recession recovery because of it.
