I feel like my family and our bikes are uninvited to Overland Park.

Wow, the uniqueness demonstrated in this project is simply stunning. There will be nothing like it in all of the metro:

Except, maybe, for this project by the same company:

Well, the pools are different. There's that.

Still don't see how this project is mixed use. Looks like any other part of Overland Park. If you draw a big enough circle, you can call anything mixed use eventially.

600,000 sq ft of new office space. Hmm, which kcmo company will be lured to that space with PEAK incentives?

Doesn't look overly exciting, but it's only a few blocks away from me so I plan to watch it pretty closely.

This new road better be self supporting in the future...otherwise, whats the point? We're just tying ourselves to years of repaving, snow plowing, curb repair, traffic light, and street light maintenance.

Obviously I'm being facetious, but i think it goes to show how ridiculous these same arguments sound against any type of development- urban or suburban. They lack any substance
you forgot line repainting. In KC that's every other year

Looks like the office towers are a long way off, and any retail as well. Not much "mixed" about this basically giant apartment complex:

This is the website for the main building that's just about to open. http://www.theroyaleatcityplace.com/

We're planning to move in in March since our side of the building won't be ready when they initially open. It's basically just a nice apartment complex with amenities similar to what you'd see with condo's. There's actually very little of it in this area, especially with larger floor plans available.

Mixed use or not, Block seems to be doing a nice job with their multifamily projects. I didn't care much about the retail because we'll be moving out before it's scheduled to be finished in 2018.

We leased about 6 months before our move-in date, and 2 out of the 4 floors were already leased on the corner that we wanted. The prices also jumped a lot right after we signed up so I assume things are going well in that regard.

Yes. It looks like it also caught a couple of nearby houses on fire as well.

maybe only half of the apartment complex looks to be burning. the wind is carrying the fire into the neighbors...some of the houses on fire looks to be several blocks away.

The building next to the main conflagration has now caught. I'm guessing that most of those are going to go down. No sprinkler system installed yet.

I live there. The main building is the only one that's occupied and it looks to be safe. If the cold front hadn't just come through and changed the wind direction our apartment would be gone. Feel terrible for the neighbors to the south though.

Overland Park council signals more tax breaks coming for CityPlace corporate campus
CityPlace developers may have yet to secure tenants for the second of four office buildings planned near U.S. 69 and College Boulevard.

But Overland Park City Council members, eager to attract businesses that pay higher rents and salaries, have already pledged tax breaks for the next phase of the mixed-use development under construction.

Council members approved a resolution Monday declaring the city’s intention to issue up to $30 million in economic development revenue bonds — which provide sales tax exemptions on construction materials — for the CityPlace Corporate Centre I building developed by Block Real Estate Services.

The resolution also authorized a 10-year, 25 percent property tax abatement for the proposed 125,912 square-foot office building. Of the four office buildings, this one is expected to be built closest to College Boulevard. Once the building is completed, its annual property taxes will increase from $11,500 to $90,000, city staff estimate.

Sad to see that Overland Park continues to be so blighted, and economically-challenged, that they still have to grant tax breaks to developers and employers.

Clearly all the suburban style homes don't provide any value to the tax base.
