So I just took a look at the master site plan. Interesting layout but what exactly is this "museum" again? Is it really going to be some regional draw that will want to make people stay and shop in the Xburbs? I see a theater/cinema is part of the plan but really? In such close proximity to AMC Town Center as well as the Palazzo? REI is a nice outdoor adventure retailer but what a crappy location when you can go elswhere in the city for that and though Cabella's is out at the Legends, at least that is considered a destination and you go to the high end outlets, NFM, Schlitterbahn, Casino, blah blah. Is it me or is this just crazy?

The theater chain is exclusively the "dine & wine at your seat" type, like at AMC's Fork & Screen. Quite a step up from the bare bones operation of The Palazzo (their lobby decor notwithstanding). Dickinson Theaters is going to become irrelevant in this town if they don't step up their game.

Unique retail and apartment project Prairiefire is a go

Prairiefire, an ambitious retail and apartment project anchored by a unique collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, is starting construction in Overland Park after six years on the drawing boards.

The first phase, valued at $160 million, will have 207,000 square feet for retailers, including the area’s first REI outdoor equipment store. It will include 300 luxury apartments and a 41,000-square-foot hall housing exhibits prepared by the Museum of Natural History, the first cooperative venture of its kind in the country for the prestigious New York institution.

Star Editorial: OP's Prairiefire helped by excessive public subsidies

Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach and the City Council supported placing this high burden on the public to help finance Prairiefire in one of the most affluent parts of the city, along 135th Street between Nall and Lamar avenues.

Combined with the city sales tax support and STAR bonds from Kansas, the shopping center will get almost half of its backing from the public, or $61 million out of $130 million.

PB&J plans to open three restaurants in the Prairiefire development in 2014

The three operations — Paradise Diner, Newport Grill and a new private dinner club concept — will open in a 13,000-square-building that will be on the corner of 135th Street and Nall Avenue.

Absolutely horrendous, terrible, ridiculous project. Not only is this project a poster child for everything that is wrong with KC, it has more public money funding it than most urban core redevelopment projects do.

You'd love their FaceBook page. Looks like they are banking heavily on REI.
