Re: Olathe Great Center
I don't understand why they can't just do a carbon copy of the Mills Mall in St Charles County. The basic plan of the great mall is exactly the same, only not built out.
The Great Mall of the Great Plains and its bizarre interior decorating themes, half complete mall and the asinine idea that this mall and its "outlet" stores would draw from 600 miles away was simply retarded and a failure before it ever opened.
Build the entertainment part of the mall that is still grass today, add an ice rink or something, rename the mall and get rid of the oz carpet.
Like I said, it's just like successful Mills Mall only it's not finished, has lame tenants and the colors and patterns of the carpet make most people nauseous.

Did the developers really claim this?GRID wrote: The Great Mall of the Great Plains and its bizarre interior decorating themes, half complete mall and the asinine idea that this mall and its "outlet" stores would draw from 600 miles away was simply retarded and a failure before it ever opened.

Re: Olathe Great Center
i dont know if they claimed that exactly, but they were claiming it would draw people from hundreds of miles away.kcmetro wrote: Did the developers really claim this?

Re: Olathe Great Center
Yea, the mall was to be "the mall" between Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas etc.kcmetro wrote: Did the developers really claim this?
Tour buses would come from all over etc. Even the name gives you the idea that this is not some regular mall, but something that should be compared with the mall of america.
Everybody in KC went once or twice that first year or two and most never went back. It never became a metro destination, let alone one that drew from hundreds of miles.
I think it could. There is still room for an enclosed mall like the Mills in KC. But it needs to be redone, and it needs to have some more regional draws added, like a nascar go-cart facility or community ice rink, both of which anchor the Mills mall in St Louis.
Retail in JoCo is overbuilt, but the county is still growing.
It think the Great Mall has a brighter future than Oak Park does though looking 10 years down the road.
Re: Olathe Great Center
i remember going to the mall when it first opened in august 1997. i was 16 years old, but instantly recognized the mall as a complete joke and never went back.

Re: Olathe Great Center
It seems like something that would be popular. As detailed in the book Applebee's America, megachurches and chain stores/restaurants serve as proxies for the town square in exurban America. I think a combination of the two could have potential. Perhaps it could also have some retail, such as Mardel, Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-A and Curves.unclejay wrote: Why?
I would never visit such a place, but I think many people would.
