Independence: Truman Library and the Church of Christ Convention Hall

Post by shinatoo »

I visited two places I haven been to since HS (the 1980's)

Convention Hall: Went to see the performance of Handel's Messiah. Place is still damn impressive and acoustically superior.

Truman Library: Still looks great. The new "Life and Times" and "Presidential Years" exhibits are vast improvements over the old exhibits, but not overly flashy. One of KC's overlooked gems.

Brings me to another point. Much like KCK I don't think Independence should be classed as a suburb. It is a old city (as old or older then KCMO) with a distinct purpose (county seat) and would be there wether KCMO existed or not. Check it out, it's worth a visit.

Handel's Messiah is fantastic-- and that's coming from a non-religious person.

Are you talking about the Community of Christ auditorium?  Yeah, it's definitely an impressive building that a lot of people don't know about if they aren't connected to the church or didn't graduate from a Missouri-side suburban school.

Independence is really four different towns.  It's classic inner-ring suburb in the west, historic town square in the north, contemporary strip mall suburb in the southeast, and farmland in the northeast.

I was speaking of the old dome which is also called the convention hall.

We did the acoustics and original sound system on the temple (spire). Tough hall for speach as it was mainly designed for the organ.
The new sound system is a line array and sould be pretty good for speach (not our design).

And it is Community of Christ, not Church of Christ (sorry, my bad).

Independence is a mini KCMO, it really is.  You even forgot the fith part of Indep.  It has some ghetto too on its north side in areas between the square and sugar creek and over near Blue Summit and the 435/40 area.

Downtown Independence is cool though.  Very overlooked and they also have some great attractions that also get overlooked in KC.

I too had never heard it called "Convention Hall", it was always "The Auditorium" when I was a member of that church.   Did they rename it when they renamed the church?

I think it is more of an offical name. As that is where they hold the world convention.

The Truman Library is set to close for a year while a $25 million renovation and expansion project is carried out, the first of its kind since the museum was built in 1957. The museum will increase its community events and relocate its educational offerings while it is closed from July 22 until late summer or early fall of 2020. The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum is located at 500 W. U.S. 24 in Independence.

Graham said the goal of the renovation is to enhance the visitor experience at the Truman Library to incorporate the expanding knowledge base on the impact of former president Harry Truman and give a holistic view of his life and presidency. The library will completely redo the museum exhibits and build a three thousand square-foot addition that will move the front entrance and lobby to the east side of the building.

The renovated first floor of the building will hold interactive exhibits exploring Truman’s early life and career through his presidency. The lower floor, which currently holds exhibits on Truman’s early life, will be renovated to hold two temporary exhibit galleries.
