Abandoned (?) cement plant...

Post by Zasco »

Hi again, members.

I was looking on Google Maps (street view) and is that an abandoned cement plant just northeast of the Sugar Creek community, bordering the Missouri River?

The cement plant in Sugar Creek is owned by Eagle Materials, based in Dallas, under the name Central Plains Cement Company, and employs 100 people at the Sugar Creek location.

It used to be owned by Lafarge North America, based in France, but was sold to Eagle Materials last fall.

The cement plant operates a deep mine operation for the extraction of limestone, used in Portland cement. The plant is the largest source of tax revenue for the City of Sugar Creek, since the oil refinery shut down.

The cement plant in Sugar Creek opened in 1905 under the name Missouri Portland Cement.

The cement plant along the river is part of a larger quarry operation, which you will see in this Google map.
