Last week, councilman Jermaine Reed introduced ordinances that would make it easier to get liquor licenses around 18th and Vine.

“The business case at work here is the city is doing all it can to demonstrate … we support our business owners, which will include new restaurants and clubs,” Reed told me.

Under one current ordinance, by-the-drink bars are generally limited to one license for every 1,500 residents within 3,000 feet of an establishment. Reed’s plan would waive that restriction for 18th and Vine.

Another ordinance prohibits a bar license within 300 feet of a church or school unless they give permission. Reed wants to end that requirement at 18th and Vine too.

Good, if they could connect it continuously with east crossroads I could see them really thrive. A bar district starting out then food options would be great. Grow it like martini corner has grown. That used to be a spot people didn't want to go to until velvet underdog went there. Just please no more tear downs

Most excellent news. I've never understood why 18th & Vine hasn't attempted a sort of mini-Beale Street vibe along with the museums. To me this is the only real way forward, with the various cultural institutions as anchors. On a side note, really wish the Peach Tree had never closed the 18th location to move to P&L, and eventually fold the "fine dining" concept.

We went to the Peach Tree exactly once, when they were at 18th and Vine and not too long before they moved.

It was like 6pm on a Friday and they were closed. Not exactly a good sign

The Peach Tree location at 18th/Vine was overpriced and underwhelming. I think they charged something outrageous like $10/person entertainment fee for a piano player. And IIRC there was some weird shag carpet in the dining area. Missed opportunity all around. Would love to see a Beale St experience or even something like Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint in Atlanta.

I think the other way forward is to build out residential to the east, west, and south. Apartments--not houses. There are plenty of lots to build on within walking distance. There are also parcels along Truman Road.

Chicken/egg, you'll have a hard time marketing that area for apartments until there are more amenities.

The liquor license quota obviously falls apart when applied to such a cratered out area.

Is there anything they can do to designate eighteenth and fine as a district so that it doesn't have to be tied to population?

I thought the whole point was they DIDN’T need to meet those population quotas for the liquor licenses. Did I read something wrong? Also, don’t a number of those locations have grandfathered in liquor licenses?

One of the reasons they need an exception for liquor licenses is that there are four churches within the district itself that could put the kabosh on any new licenses. Five if you count St. Monica's.

'Truly a blessing': A grand opening for state-of-the-art inner city baseball complex
...
Last year Alta Vista could barely interest enough players to field a full baseball roster. But now, with the new Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy in their backyard, the team roster has nearly tripled.

Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals hope every school in the urban core will be similarly transformed with the official opening Thursday, March 29, of the $21 million state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor baseball facility.

The academy will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. prior to Thursday afternoon's Royals opening day game against the Chicago White Sox.

On Saturday, the academy will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when members of the community can sign up for programs, test out the grounds and tour one of the most talked about development projects in the city.

Designed by Populus and J.E. Dunn Construction in the 18th and Vine District, the academy features four outdoor fields — two regulation baseball fields, one softball and one Little League. Those have been open for months.

The big reveal will be the sprawling 38,000-square-foot indoor facility. The outside walls are covered in colorful murals of baseball players in hues of black and brown, Caribbean and Latin American flags and portraits of Kansas City baseball royalty such as Satchel Paige, George Brett and Salvador Perez.

I noticed some work is being done on the old Street and Water Dept. buildings on Vine Street across from the old KC Workhouse. It appears the roofs and support beams have been completely removed and there is work being done to rebuild some of the upper structure above the windows.

The roofs came out many months ago. Last fall sometime.

Probably a huge amount of brick work is keeping this project slow. To me this is a good sign they're doing it right.

There used to be a rather large building in that grassy lot behind those buildings. I saw a photo recently showing it standing behind them.

Kansas City Council Acts To Take Greater Control Of Jazz Museum
Acting to exert greater control over the financially strapped American Jazz Museum, the Kansas City Council's Finance and Audit Committee Wednesday approved two ordinances that would halt any new city money going to the museum, remove Third District councilpeople from the board and, eventually, clear the way for Mayor Sly James to name a new board of directors.
