Fire destroys furniture store off Truman and Montgall early Saturday
A fire destroyed a furniture store early Saturday morning off Truman Road and Montgall Avenue.
Furniture USA Appliances was located at 2626 E. Truman Road. There were no injuries, according to a Kansas City Fire Department dispatcher.
This building was the former Montgall Hotel, and also housed a pool hall in the past. It's a sad loss because it was one of the more ornate buildings along Truman Road.
When I was a kid in the 60's, Truman Road awed me. So many large old buildings (a lot were the glass and brick warehouses that have become so rare in KC) and still quite a bit of activity. Not so much today. I hate losing what's left and there's absolutely no catalyst today driving any kind of gentrification in that direction so nothing is likely to be replaced when something is destroyed, just vacant land.
I'd love to go back to 1940 and spend a few days seeing that part of KC in its heyday.
I was just driving along Truman Road about 20 minutes ago thinking about what it must have looked like in its heyday and the potential it has when I drove past this building. A small portion by the door is still standing. Even though I didn’t know what the rest of it looked like, I could tell it had been a beautiful building. Seeing these pictures bums me out
