Roasterie Expansion Update
Roasterie Expansion Update
From The Roasterie's latest newsletter:
"We received several hundred letters and phone calls regarding the possibility of purchasing the Folgers plant. We toured it, studied it, discussed it with the current owner as well as several stakeholders downtown, but ultimately came to the conclusion that it just wasn’t feasible. In the end, while possible, it would have taken a mind-numbing amount of money to transform it into a space that would work for us. But the good news is that there are other folks who are interested and those beautiful, precious buildings will have new lives.
As the saying goes, ‘one door closes, and another opens.' This has been the case with us. We’ve been working on a plant remodel/expansion for about a year, and while we were considering the Folgers plant, the property directly across the street became available. It is nearly a full city block and includes nearly 50,000 square feet of buildings. We are in the process of moving our docks to the back of the building, building a new cupping room, Café and event space. The Café will include an outdoor patio with trellis and gardens and the event space (the Bean Hangar) will take us back to the ten years at our previous plant where we hosted hundreds of events. In addition to a super cool new ‘green’ garage, one option for the new property will be to transform the huge barrel-vaulted-ceilinged brick building into an awesome event space for up to 500 or more people. Once again we are blessed to have our neighbors, the EDC and the city of Kansas City behind us. We’ve held several meetings and will have several more before the final plan is determined. While the popularity of our tours (every Monday--Saturday at 10:00 a.m.) has driven the need to revamp the Café and meeting space, the increase in business is leading to the expansion. So, we are taking the opportunity to create a master plan that will take us to the next twenty years…although our last twenty-year plan lasted less than five."

I assumed they meant right across the street from their current location just off SW Blvd.

I think it's the building that used to be the Guadalupe Youth Center, and the adjacent building that housed Sports Association Management.

Man this is good news that are staying on the Westside. I was hoping they would buy a building on the corner of 27th and Holly, which is across of the current Roasterie offices. I guess they did not.

Re: Roasterie Expansion Update
Business Journal story on the expansion. The most interesting part is that they are going to mount a DC-3 airplane outside the plant.

Re: Roasterie Expansion Update
http://www.kansascity.com/2012/02/16/34 ... rylink=cpyThe Roasterie has started a $3.7 million expansion of it headquarters, 1204 W. 27th St., a project that was announced in June 2011.A couple of loading docks have already been moved to the back of the building and a new café will open in their place, with covered outdoor seating, a trellis and garden area, and a real (but gutted) DC-3 airplane stationed above. The Roasterie’s logo includes a DC-3, partly as a symbol for its “air” roasted coffee.
Next week, the company hopes to start moving offices within the building, break down some walls, and start building a steel structure “runway” with 72 sparkling blue runway lights for the DC-3.

• The Roasterie coffee company will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its $5 million expansion at 4 p.m. today at its headquarters at 1204 W. 27th St. The expansion will include a new Roasterie Cafe, a larger “cupping room” where custom blends are developed for retail clients such as coffee shops and restaurants, the Bean Hanger event space that accommodates up to 400 people, and a full-size mounted DC-3 airplane on the roof over the front entrance.
The expansion is scheduled to be competed this fall.

Re: Roasterie Expansion Update
I've seen the expansion plans and they look great.
They already have the wooden support beams on the roof that will support the airplane, which will be visible over the skyline from the freeway.
The café drawings reminded me of the ING cafés in large cities, and the larger cupping room is very much needed.
If you take a tour of the Roasterie, you can see for yourself!

Re: Roasterie Expansion Update
Interesting business decision to put a Roasterie Cafe in - there really isn't much going on in the immediate area, this could be a real catalyst for additional retail/restaurant.

Re: Roasterie Expansion Update
I was sorta thinking the same regarding putting a cafe right there, but there is already a cafe there and when I asked if I could go there and have coffee they told me I could but it is not even advertised. That said I am glad since I live a few blocks from there and I will surely walk there to enjoy some Joe and maybe work from there.

Roasterie expansion to include bakery, theater
http://tinyurl.com/j7buykf...
The company, which celebrated its 23rd anniversary last month, plans to expand its factory and include an 800-square-foot bakery and a theater showcasing the company’s history.
“We’ll build a theater that will look like a DC-3, and so when you walk in, the lights will dim, you’ll sit down and we’ll show three or four little vignettes,” said founder Danny O’Neill.
...
O’Neill said the company is working on clearing out the area for construction to start. He said the bakery and theater should be ready by the end of February.
