This looks cool, but what exactly is futuristic about it? Luxury projects like this have been built all over the world for years.

TIL the phrase "thinking about the future" is the same thing as being futuristic. Incredibly lazy.

It's marketing, don't take it literally.

Curious that they've been allowed to now entirely closed 19th Street from Main to Walnut to car traffic. Thankfully the pedestrian detour remains in place.

Remember, the drury inn by city hall is being described as fitting into kansas city's architecture. They'll say anything.

The copy editor who wrote that headline should be smacked in the face with a trout.

I love this project. It could be taller and have less parking but it will bring ~500 residents downtown along with ground floor retail. I wonder if this project could secure another CVS/bodega/grocer.

If the free streetcar didn't exist would say each primary downtown neighborhood should ideally have its own small market and/or drugstore. But with free streetcar, CVS and Consentino's are just a horizontal elevator ride away. Still, would be good to have Walgreens somewhere downtown for competition as well as a few well placed bodega/small grocers - River Market is covered, Xroads could use something.

Sort of. I liked Sundry quite a bit, but as a grocer or even convenience store it just didn't work. Tiny selection, high prices. I did like the booze and prepared food, and was a decent secret brunch spot.

Still hope they do well, haven't been to the Westport Commons location yet. In fact, I always thought they were sort of lured there, vs. "failing" in the xroads? They've got the big Cultivate KC field over there now too which is really cool.

A good location for another drug store would be in a new development at 20th and Grand (think City Club Apartments, but developing the entire block from scratch), and building higher. Two 20-story towers linked by mid-block heights of 5-10 stories;

or assuming that 27th Street gets developed with more apartment buildings from Gillham to Main, a drug store at 27th and Grand.

I was looking at some older renderings of this project and was a bit confused by the scope.

So it will encompass the Midwest Hotel Building, the now vacant lot to the north (new construction), a one story restaurant on the lot to the south, and from the renderings, it appears the entire lot behind (east of the Midwest Hotel) will also be part of the apartment complex (new construction)?

I guess a parking structure somewhere on the property will be part of the development?

That hotel building has been through a lot. Glad to see it survive

Underground parking from the alley right-of-way (vacated) east to Walnut and maybe mid-block south to 20th. That will be constructed first, along with utility work (hence the closure of 19th Street). The hotel will be the amenity stack, a new single-story restaurant space to the south of that, and the rest will be 5-6 stories of multifamily and additional retail (mostly facing Main) wrapped around a central courtyard and the remaining structures.
